Colby Barlow of Orillia is making steady progress toward achieving his Colby Barlow NHL dream by developing his skills in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate. Selected 18th overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Barlow is now in his first full professional season, focusing on increasing his impact on the ice.
Season Performance and Development in Professional Hockey
Halfway through the season, the six-foot, 195-pound winger has recorded three goals and five assists over 37 games, gaining valuable experience at the pro level. Barlow acknowledges the significant jump in speed and physicality from junior hockey.
The pro level is so fast and physically demanding,
Barlow said in a video posted by the Manitoba Moose’s social media channels.
Since signing his three-year entry-level contract with the Jets on September 22, 2023, he describes his first year in the AHL as both challenging and enjoyable, eager to continue improving.
I think I’ve grown my game from training camp to now,
he stated, emphasizing the importance of consistent progress by adding,
to keep building, building and building.
Early Years and Junior Hockey Accomplishments
Barlow’s hockey journey began in Orillia, where he played minor hockey before advancing to the region’s AAA program with the North Central Predators. In 2021, he was selected eighth overall by the Owen Sound Attack and quickly made an impression by becoming the youngest captain in the team’s history. His exceptional play earned him the Ontario Hockey League’s Scholastic Player of the Year award in 2023.
Known for his powerful shot, Barlow aims to mirror the playing style of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, whom he has said he tries to emulate.
Following three strong seasons in Owen Sound, Barlow was traded to the Oshawa Generals, where he contributed to the team’s run to the OHL championship final last winter.

His agent, John Walters, who also represents NHL players Tyler Seguin and Carter Verhaeghe, praises Barlow’s relentless competitiveness and character. Walters called him “amongst the elite” in competitive nature and noted his refusal to accept defeat.

There are some players in the NHL who, I think, some of their fame and how good they are gets to them, but Colby is really grounded and humble.

Despite his burgeoning career, Barlow maintains a deep connection to Orillia and often reflects fondly on his hometown, family, and friends.

Some of these guys kind of forget where they were and how they got to where they’ve got to, but Colby is not one of those guys.
Barlow’s dedication to inspiring local youth was evident when he received Orillia’s Athlete of the Year award for 2022. At the awards ceremony, he expressed his desire to serve as a positive influence for young athletes.
I want to be a role model for the kids,
Barlow stated.
