The New York Islanders ended a two-game losing streak on Tuesday by staging a dramatic comeback, with Mathew Barzal playing a pivotal role in their overtime victory. The team fought hard against the Pittsburgh Penguins, showcasing resilience and teamwork to reverse the game’s momentum. Barzal’s performance was instrumental, contributing a goal and two assists that fueled the Islanders’ rally.
Game Highlights and Key Contributions
Bo Horvat made a significant impact with two goals and an assist, nearly interacting with a Rally Bird on the ice during the third period. Barzal tied the game in the final minutes of regulation with a one-timer that eluded Penguins goalie Stuart Skinner. After Pittsburgh reclaimed the lead, Barzal once again set up defenseman Ryan Pulock to even the score five minutes later. Overtime saw Barzal assist Horvat for the winning goal that sealed the comeback.
Player and Coach Perspectives on the Victory
Reflecting on the win, Barzal described the emotional ride of the game and its importance to team morale.
“I thought we came out, had a great start, and then we were just always down a goal, and then we get it tied up late, and they get one in front of the net there, and we kind of have a bad power play. And tonight was big, just for the morale in this room, just to know that it doesn’t really matter how the game goes — up [and] down the entire night. I think we knew the whole way we were getting it done. We felt super confident every period.”

Islanders head coach Patrick Roy praised the team’s resilience and key players.
“Tonight was a game that we had to be resilient in, a game where we had to battle to come back, and that’s what we did,”
he said.
“Bo and ‘Barzy’ had a strong night, and they scored big goals for us. … This is what we call a season. I mean, there’s different ways to win games, and tonight was a good example. We found a way to win, and we had to be bold at a lot of moments in that game. And I thought we were.”
