Among the many achievements of the Colorado Avalanche this season, one standout milestone is the emergence of a fitting nickname for forward Artturi Lehkonen. In a team meeting held in late November or early December, a video was shown highlighting a player who deliberately sacrificed scoring chances to draw defensive attention away from teammates, allowing key plays to unfold. That player was Lehkonen, whose selflessness inspired his teammates to dub him the “sacrificial lamb.” This nickname, as noted by Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, perfectly captures the role Lehkonen plays on the ice.
Lehkonen has shed the label of being an underrated player; he is widely recognized as an essential, well-rounded contributor to the Avalanche’s success. Beyond the NHL, he is also expected to be a vital part of Finland’s roster at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Although not featured prominently in NBC’s promotions for Finland’s marquee game against Sweden on February 13, Lehkonen remains a crucial player for the Finnish team, known for defying expectations as a consistent underdog that often outperforms stronger opponents.
Lehkonen’s International Ambitions and Mindset
Lehkonen expressed pride and a strong sense of responsibility about representing Finland on the international stage. He emphasized the significance of the opportunity and acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the Olympic tournament format.

“You always want to represent your country. It means a lot for sure,”
Lehkonen said.
“I think we’ve got a really good team, but we know it’s a short tournament. Anything can happen. I think we’ve got a really, really good shot.”
Personality Beyond the Ice: A Quiet Leader and Beloved Teammate
Lehkonen’s presence off the ice is marked by modesty and a reserved nature, especially with the media. Though not overly verbal, those close to him appreciate his humor and interests, including Marvel and Harry Potter. This blend of humility and relatability makes him a cherished teammate in the locker room.
His peers consistently praise his dedication, intelligence, and competitiveness, often referring to him affectionately and emphasizing his importance to team chemistry and performance.
Teammates Share What Makes Lehkonen So Valuable
Nathan MacKinnon highlighted Lehkonen’s reliability and competitive spirit.
“He just does everything correct. Routes are a big part of hockey. Predictability as a linemate is important, and he definitely brings those two things. He’s got a great attitude. He’s selfless and just a very competitive guy as well. He’s very, very competitive. Quiet, obviously, but a great sense of humor, and just a warrior for us.”
Brock Nelson commended the intricate aspects of Lehkonen’s game that often go unnoticed.
“If you know the game, you appreciate the ins and outs, the intricacies of his game. It’s all the little plays, the battles. He does a little bit of everything. He impacts the game in every way. It’s just the way he goes about it. Just a quiet guy, humble, goes out there, works extremely hard and gets the job done. He’s an easy guy to root for.”
Defenseman Cale Makar focused on Lehkonen’s relentless intensity and team-first mentality.
“It’s his compete level. It’s on another level and it’s completely unmatched. He’s kind of a Swiss Army knife. You can put in any scenario and he’ll do his best, never any questions asked. He’ll always do what’s best for the team. He’s also an unreal guy and unreal teammate.”
Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood captured Lehkonen’s willingness to endure the toughest tasks without complaint.
“Because he does all the (expletive) nobody wants to do. Every day, he does all the (expletive) everybody dreads doing — going in the corners, going to the net front, getting crosschecked, taking hits to make little plays. Nobody wants to freaking do that (expletive) all the time, and he does it every day. So that’s why everybody loves Artturi.”
Physical Stature Contrasted with Grit and Tenacity
Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 179 pounds, Lehkonen is smaller compared to some Avalanche teammates like Brock Nelson and Valeri Nichushkin, who have more imposing physiques. Nichushkin, for example, shares Lehkonen’s commitment to doing the hard work in corners and in front of the net but towers at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds.
Despite his smaller size, Lehkonen’s capacity to withstand physical punishment while continuing to make impactful plays is striking. Blackwood described him as a “junkyard dog,” emphasizing that size alone doesn’t define effectiveness; mental toughness plays a key role.
“You don’t always have to be the biggest guy if you have the mind for it. That’s something you can’t teach people. They either have the mind for it or they don’t.”
Lehkonen’s Hockey IQ and Long-Term Success
Growing up as the son of a coach, Lehkonen’s mental approach to hockey has become one of his greatest assets. His ability to understand and anticipate the flow of the game allows him to maintain a role on the Avalanche’s top line alongside some of the NHL’s best players.
MacKinnon remarked on how Lehkonen’s commitment to competing consistently is a reason for his longevity in the league.
“I think he’s figured out that’s how he’s going to make a living and stay in this league a long time,”
MacKinnon said.
“He just competes his ass off every night. I think that’s why you see a lot of guys come and go where they just don’t have that fire to compete. They just can’t do it every night for six, seven months. That’s what he brings.”
Rather than dazzling with sheer speed or power, Lehkonen uses craft and anticipation to maintain his effectiveness. He consistently positions himself to receive passes and support plays, particularly showing intelligence on the penalty kill and in crowded situations close to the net.
Brock Nelson noted Lehkonen’s exceptional stickhandling and positional awareness.
“He’s so smart with his stick,”
Nelson said.
“I feel like you can’t really tie up his stick. He’s always in a good spot where he knows he can keep his stick free and open. I think the timing is a big part of it. He just has all of it pieced together. He can find his certain spots, get there and I’m sure he takes a beating but he stands in there and always has a chance. He knows all the right angles and how to get himself open.”
Selflessness and Talent Combined
Lehkonen’s unselfish style fosters loyalty among teammates and fans, yet he also possesses skill beyond mere work ethic and courage. His ability to perform the less glamorous, gritty aspects of hockey with effectiveness illustrates his value.
Josh Manson, an Avalanche defenseman, praised Lehkonen for his ability to disrupt opponents and maintain puck possession in critical moments.
“Art just has this way of like, getting in the way,”
Manson said. “When he’s around the net, he’s getting in the way and winning puck touches. I think that’s one of his most unbelievable qualities is the way he wins puck touches in every zone, keeping pucks alive. It’s a real skill to just always be in the way, tangling guys up.”
“Just think of his line. Nate is going to beat guys one-on-one. So that turns it into a two-on-one, but instead, there is Art tangled up with the guy, and he can’t get over to play Nate and now it’s one-on-one with the goalie. He created that for Nate.”
Scoring Achievements Highlight Full Contribution
While many of Lehkonen’s contributions occur away from the spotlight, his scoring ability has steadily improved. Last season, he achieved a career-high 27 goals and is on pace to surpass that with 28 goals this year. With 42 points already this season, Lehkonen is approaching another personal best, which suggests a continued upward trajectory.
His two goals in the Avalanche’s final game before the Olympic break exemplify his multifaceted impact. The first goal came during a chaotic goalmouth scramble, where he scored from behind the net while on his knees. His second goal involved smart positioning during a 3-on-2 rush, where, after his teammates failed to convert, Lehkonen arrived late as a trailer and found an open spot for MacKinnon to pass to him for a quick shot.
MacKinnon summarized Lehkonen’s broad skill set succinctly:
“He’s not going to be necessarily carrying the puck around all night, but he’s going to be the best forechecker, best backchecker, great penalty killer,”
MacKinnon said.
“He’s got great goal-scoring instincts as well. He does everything like, pretty good or really good, you know? He has no weaknesses.”
MacKinnon also recalled an anecdote:
“He told us that a coach in Montreal told him he’ll never score 20 goals in this league, and he almost had 30 last year. That was great.”
Lehkonen’s Broader Impact and Future Outlook
Artturi Lehkonen’s role as the Avalanche’s “sacrificial lamb” underscores the importance of players who perform the demanding, often overlooked tasks that enable team success. His blend of intelligence, grit, and consistent competitiveness has cemented him as an indispensable player for Colorado and an essential contributor for Finland’s national team heading into the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Going forward, Lehkonen’s ability to compete at a high level while taking on the toughest assignments will continue to shape his career and influence the Avalanche’s pursuit of championships. His unique combination of selflessness and skill serves as a model of perseverance and team-first dedication in professional hockey.
