Comments from Team Management on Captaincy

Bill Guerin, the general manager of Team USA, praised the trio’s leadership skills, noting their past successes as a guiding force for the team.

“Auston, Charlie and Matthew did a great job in leading our team a year ago at the 4 Nations Face-Off and it’s great to have them back in those roles for the Olympics,”

Guerin said. He added,

“They all bring different leadership traits to the table and I know all three are excited, as is our whole team, about representing our country as part of Team USA.”

Shared History and Experience Among Leaders

Matthews, McAvoy, and Tkachuk have considerable chemistry, having competed together three times internationally. Their recent collaboration contributed to the U.S. securing second place at the 4 Nations Face-Off held last February in Montreal and Boston. Earlier achievements include winning gold at the 2015 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship and earning bronze at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Matthews’ Proven Track Record in Leadership Roles

Currently serving as the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthews brings valuable leadership experience to Team USA. His role with the Maple Leafs demonstrates his ability to lead top-tier hockey players on a consistent basis.

Upcoming Olympic Games and Opening Match

The U.S. team is set to begin their Olympic competition on February 12 in Milan, facing off against Latvia. Matthews’ appointment as captain is expected to inspire confidence and provide steady leadership as Team USA aims for success in the Olympic tournament.
