El Paso Owner Cory Herman Leads NHL Outdoor Ice Setup Experts

Since 2022, Cory Herman, owner of the El Paso Rhinos, has been instrumental in preparing ice surfaces for NHL games held outdoors rather than inside traditional arenas. His work gained attention following El Paso’s selection to host a preseason NHL game in 2021, showcasing his ability to manage ice maintenance under challenging desert conditions.

Challenges and Achievements in Desert Ice Maintenance

Maintaining an ice rink in South Central El Paso’s desert environment, particularly at the County Coliseum Events Center, is a difficult feat. However, Herman’s expertise and dedication have successfully supported the growth of hockey in the region for over two decades. NHL officials have recognized his skills, leading to his invitation to join the NHL’s outdoor ice setup team.

Herman has contributed to the installation and upkeep of ice for more than eleven outdoor NHL games at various stadiums across North America.

Insights Gained From NHL Outdoor Game Experience

Reflecting on his journey, Herman described the opportunity as highly rewarding.

“To be a part of this is very rewarding, and it’s just an unbelievable experience,”

he said.

The knowledge he has acquired during these outdoor events has also enhanced the quality of El Paso’s own ice rink. He explained,

“You kind of learn different things on how to to make an ice rink run more efficient and better,”

and added,

“It’s really helped us a lot because all the teams that come to play the Rhinos always compliment us that we have the best ice around.”

Upcoming Outdoor NHL Events to Benefit From Herman’s Expertise

Looking ahead to the 2026-27 NHL season, Herman is expected to be busy as he prepares ice for several prominent outdoor games. These include the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; the Winter Classic in Salt Lake City, Utah; and the Stadium Series held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Regarding these future events, Herman expressed enthusiasm:

“It will be just another great experience, and a great learning experience as well,”

highlighting his optimism for continued growth in his field.

Impact on Local Hockey and Future Prospects

Cory Herman’s leadership in NHL outdoor ice setup not only brings national attention to El Paso but also advances the sport locally by improving ice quality and rink operations.
