Foegele had a career-best performance last season, contributing 24 goals and 22 assists, ranking second on the Kings in five-on-five goals with 23. This season, however, his production has slowed to eight points over 43 games, partly due to injuries. Despite these setbacks, Foegele’s gameplay metrics indicate a decrease in offensive zone starts, dropping to 10.5%, while defensive zone shifts have risen to 12.6%, according to MoneyPuck data. This shift has limited his offensive opportunities rather than reflecting a reduction in skill.
Buffalo expects key players like Zach Benson and Josh Norris to return after the Olympic break, yet the team still faces a need to solidify its bottom-six forwards. Adding a player with Foegele’s ability to maintain puck possession and pressure in the offensive zone would provide a boost, particularly alongside Norris and Jack Quinn.
Trade Potential and Contract Considerations
Foegele is currently under contract through the following season, carrying a $3.5 million average annual value, which represents reasonable cost certainty for Buffalo. Should the Kings be motivated to move him quickly, there may be opportunities for salary retention, making a trade more appealing for the Sabres.
