Team Sweden is set to begin its pursuit of a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics with a game against host nation Italy on Thursday, featuring William Nylander despite earlier injury concerns. The Toronto Maple Leafs forward was initially doubtful for the opening match after missing practice, but his participation was confirmed on the official lineup.
Nylander will be positioned on Sweden’s top offensive line alongside Adrian Kempe and Joel Eriksson Ek. On defense, Philip Broberg and Erik Karlsson will form the leading pairing, while Jacob Markstrom is expected to start in goal.
Coach Provides Insight on Nylander’s Condition Following Skate
Although Nylander’s fitness remained uncertain after the team’s morning skate, Sweden’s coach Sam Hallam offered some updates regarding his health. According to NHL.com’s Bill Price, Hallam noted Nylander’s positive appearance during practice but awaited final medical clearance.
He looked good on the ice,
Hallam said.
He felt good before. I haven’t been in the locker room yet. So I just need last check with medical staff and Willy. But [it’s a] positive that he was out on the ice today.

Previous Injury and Importance of Nylander to Sweden’s Lineup
Nylander’s status had caused some unease since he missed practice due to what was initially described as maintenance. This raised concerns because he recently struggled with a groin injury while playing for the Maple Leafs. Sweden values Nylander’s offensive skills highly, especially against Italy, a team without NHL talent.
Historically, Sweden holds a 2-0 record against Italy in Olympic competition and has never lost to them at the senior international level. Hallam emphasized the team’s reliance on Nylander’s abilities regardless of the opponent.
It doesn’t matter who we play, we want Willy on the ice. He gives us that extra offensive edge,
Hallam added.
Group B Outlook and Upcoming Challenges
After Slovakia’s surprising upset of Finland earlier in the day, Sweden likely gained further motivation to have Nylander available. As the favorites to top Group B, Sweden will face Finland on Friday and Slovakia on Saturday after their opener against Italy.
Italy’s schedule includes matches against Slovakia and Finland on the same days, setting up a competitive group stage. Sweden’s ability to field key players like Nylander could be decisive as the tournament progresses.
