Kevin Korchinski Recalled by Blackhawks Amid Defense Shakeup

The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled defense prospects Kevin Korchinski and Sam Rinzel from their AHL affiliate in Rockford, announced Wednesday, as defenseman Wyatt Kaiser was placed on injured reserve retroactive to February 4. This move gives Chicago added depth on the blue line amid Kaiser’s absence and a challenging stretch for their defensive corps.

Opportunities Arise with No Olympians on Defense

With no Blackhawks defensemen currently participating in the Olympics in Italy, both Korchinski and Rinzel are expected to see meaningful ice time. Korchinski, selected seventh overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, stands to fill the role Kaiser vacated as a left-handed defenseman, providing a direct slot replacement. After accumulating 15 points across 76 games as a rookie in 2023-24, Chicago has limited his NHL exposure this season, focusing on refining his overall game in the AHL.

Korchinski’s Progress and Challenges in the AHL

Korchinski’s performance in the minors reflects the organization’s cautious approach to his development following an early NHL debut at 19. Over 101 games with Rockford in two seasons, he has posted a 5-45–50 scoring output, but with a minus-39 rating overall, including a team-worst minus-22 this year. Despite defensive struggles, he leads Rockford’s defensemen with 23 points in 45 games. Chicago’s offense, ranked 26th in the league, has suffered from limited contributions aside from Artyom Levshunov, so Korchinski’s potential offensive input will be valuable until Kaiser returns.

Sam Rinzel’s Development Path and Current Outlook

Rinzel, picked several selections after Korchinski in the 2022 draft, impressed during his NHL debut late last season with five assists in nine games after finishing his sophomore year at the University of Minnesota. However, as a full-time NHL player this season, his average ice time dropped to 17:09 per game over the first two months. After posting nine points and an even rating in 31 appearances, the Blackhawks sent Rinzel back to Rockford in early December for further development. There, he has earned 14 points in 23 games with a minus-8 rating on a struggling team with a minus-30 goal differential.

Competition for Ice Time Among Blackhawks Defensemen

Rinzel’s position on the Blackhawks’ active roster is less secure, as he is one of four right-handed defensemen competing for minutes. Head coach Jeff Blashill often dresses seven defensemen per game, which could provide Rinzel with opportunities to join the lineup, albeit with limited ice time compared to Korchinski’s more assured role.

Wyatt Kaiser’s Injury and Expected Return

Kaiser suffered a lower-body injury in Chicago’s final game before the Olympic break. Coach Blashill indicated Kaiser will miss a few games but is expected to return before the season’s end, highlighting the temporary nature of this defensive reshuffling.

Implications for the Blackhawks’ Defensive Depth

This recall signals a critical moment for Chicago’s defensive unit, testing how emerging players like Korchinski and Rinzel can contribute under pressure. Korchinski’s more favorable positioning as a lefty and his offensive potential might help stabilize the team’s struggling scoring from the back end. Meanwhile, Rinzel’s consistent performance in Rockford suggests he could become a reliable option when ice time becomes available. How these prospects perform could influence the Blackhawks’ defensive strategies as the season progresses and Kaiser works toward recovery.
