As the Winnipeg Jets gear up to resume their season after the Olympic pause, there is cautious optimism about bringing back some defensive players from injury. Head coach Scott Arniel updated reporters on Tuesday regarding the status of Colin Miller, Neal Pionk, and Haydn Fluery, all of whom have been sidelined to varying degrees.
Colin Miller Returns to Skating; Pionk May Rejoin for Road Games
Colin Miller recently resumed skating and is scheduled for an injured reserve skate on Wednesday. Neal Pionk, previously considered week-to-week, is now viewed as a candidate to participate in the Jets’ upcoming road trip. Both players have been coping with lower-body injuries that limited their availability in recent weeks.
Miller has been out since December 21 due to a lower-body issue, recording one assist and a minus-8 rating over 15 games this season. Pionk’s absence began after January 13 following a lower-body injury sustained while blocking a shot. Before his injury, the 30-year-old had contributed two goals and six assists across 40 contests.
Haydn Fluery’s Recovery Continues, Uncertain Timeline Ahead
Haydn Fluery remains sidelined after being injured in a hard hit on January 7. He is still considered week-to-week as he works to regain his conditioning. Arniel indicated that Fluery is making progress but will require additional time before returning to competitive play. Fluery has yet to register a point in 17 games this season.
Upcoming Schedule and Future Outlook for the Jets’ Defense
The Winnipeg Jets will return to action on February 25 when they face the Vancouver Canucks to start a three-game road trip. The potential reintegration of Colin Miller and Neal Pionk could provide a needed boost to the team’s defensive unit, which has been impacted by injuries. How these returns will affect the team’s approach and performance remains to be seen as they push deeper into the season.
Updates from #NHLJets head coach Scott Arniel:
Colin Miller skated yesterday and will do IR skate tomorrow.
Neal Pionk is a possibility to play on the road trip.
Haydn Fleury is getting better, will need some time to get his conditioning back up.
