Vancouver Canucks center Filip Chytil will be sidelined indefinitely due to a facial fracture sustained during a practice drill, head coach Adam Foote announced Friday. The injury occurred on Wednesday as the team was preparing to resume play following the NHL’s Winter Olympics break, with Chytil struck in the face by a puck.
Details Surrounding the Injury and Ongoing Medical Evaluation
Foote described the incident as a stroke of misfortune, explaining that the puck deflected off a defenseman’s skate before hitting Chytil.
“I think it went off one of our defenseman’s skates and skipped up. Really some bad luck for him,”
Foote told reporters, noting that specialists are currently assessing whether surgery will be necessary to address the injury.
Chytil’s Ongoing Health Challenges and Recent Performance
Chytil’s health has been fragile during the season due to ongoing concussion issues that have restricted him to just 12 games this year and excluded him from representing Czechia at the Winter Olympics. At 26 years old, he has contributed three goals in his first full season with Vancouver, after being acquired from the New York Rangers in January 2025 as part of the deal for J.T. Miller.
Last season, Chytil’s campaign was cut short by a whiplash injury after scoring 13 goals and totaling 26 points across 56 games between the Rangers and Canucks. He managed only ten appearances during the 2023-24 season before those injuries impacted his playtime.
Selected 21st overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Chytil has accumulated 80 goals and 173 points over 405 career games to date.
Upcoming Challenges for Canucks Amid Struggles
The Canucks are enduring a difficult season, holding the lowest point total in the NHL with 42 points from 57 games. Their next contest is scheduled for next Wednesday at home against the Winnipeg Jets as they attempt to rebound from a tough stretch.
