Alex Ovechkin intends to determine his next steps after the Washington Capitals complete their regular season, which resumes with a 23-game stretch starting Wednesday following the Olympic break. At 40 years old, Ovechkin is weighing his options as the season enters its critical final phase.
Time Away Spent with Family in Dubai
Ovechkin used the extended pause in NHL play to take a family trip to Dubai, distancing himself from the pressures of hockey.
“You have to enjoy your time, spend time with the family. Don’t think about hockey,”
he explained to NHL.com.
Performance and Leadership Expectations
Before the break, Ovechkin had scored just two goals over 13 games, but he returned with a total of 48 points in 59 games. He acknowledged the need to step up to help the Capitals’ chances as they face a challenging path to the playoffs.
“I have to do more because I’m a leader and I have to lead the way and start getting points,”
he said.
Capitals in a Tight Race for Playoff Spot
Washington currently trails by four points behind Boston for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and sits four points behind the New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division. Ovechkin recognizes that his team likely must win nearly every remaining game to secure a playoff berth.
Contract Status and Reflection on Future
Ovechkin’s current five-year contract, signed in 2021, will conclude at the end of this season. With 919 regular-season goals to his name, he is considering his next move but plans to take time before making a decision. He shared,
“We have to make a decision. We have to talk with the family, with (Capitals owner) Ted (Leonsis), (general manager Chris Patrick), and then we’ll see.”
Next Steps Beyond the Current Season
Although Ovechkin is uncertain about his future, he intends to evaluate all factors carefully once the Capitals’ season finishes. His decision will likely involve discussions with close family and key team figures such as Ted Leonsis and Chris Patrick, indicating a thoughtful approach to his career’s next chapter.
