Buffalo Sabres winger Zach Benson will not take the ice in the team’s first game following the NHL’s Olympic break because of an undisclosed injury separate from his prior upper-body issue, head coach Lindy Ruff revealed to NHL.com’s Heather Engel. Despite this setback, Benson has been continuing to practice independently.
Recap of Benson’s Injury and Recent Performance
Benson suffered a hard hit against the boards on February 2nd during the Sabres’ victory over the Florida Panthers. Prior to the collision, he had scored Buffalo’s fourth goal in the game. His contributions this season include 26 points in 42 games, with four points in his last six appearances. Benson looks poised to achieve career milestones this year, including surpassing 20 assists and recording a positive plus-minus rating. This progress coincides with his promotion to second-line roles, thanks in large part to his relentless effort away from the puck.
Young Prospect Konsta Helenius Steps Up During Benson’s Absence
Buffalo has leaned on top prospect Konsta Helenius to fill the void left by Benson in the last two games. Helenius made a noticeable impact defensively, notching four hits and maintaining an even plus-minus across these contests. Although he hasn’t continued his early scoring pace—earning four points in his first three NHL games—Helenius remains a valuable contributor beyond offensive stats.
Competition for Roster Spots Heats Up with Benson’s Return Looming
When Benson is ready to return, the Sabres will face challenging lineup decisions. Benson is expected to rejoin the top nine forwards, while Helenius will compete for ice time alongside Isak Rosen, Tyson Kozak, and Beck Malenstyn. The organization has generally preferred to keep Helenius with their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, where he currently ranks third in scoring with 38 points in 40 games.
Lindy Ruff said he doesn’t expect Zach Benson to play Wednesday. He’s dealing with an issue unrelated to the upper-body injury and they’re not waiting for more info on that.
