Geno Auriemma Praises UConn’s Tage Thompson for Olympic Gold

Tage Thompson, a University of Connecticut alumnus, played a pivotal role in helping the United States men’s hockey team secure gold in the recent Olympic tournament, defeating Canada. This accomplishment highlights a remarkable achievement beyond UConn’s well-known dominance in women’s basketball, showcasing the university’s growing influence in men’s hockey as well.

Geno Auriemma, UConn’s renowned head coach of the women’s basketball team, warmly acknowledged Thompson’s success and its positive impact on the university and its athletic programs.

Auriemma Reflects on Thompson’s Historic Win and UConn’s Athletic Legacy

Auriemma described the moment of winning an Olympic gold medal as

“probably the most incredible feeling that you can ever imagine,”

emphasizing how it benefits not only Thompson but also his program and teammates, as well as the university itself. He added,

“It elevates him, and it elevates the hockey program because they’ll always have that”

as a lasting legacy.

He also expressed surprise and curiosity about how many other UConn athletes might have participated in the hockey final between the U.S. and Canada during their collegiate careers. Auriemma reflected on the university’s athletic journey, recalling earlier days watching hockey games outdoors in cold conditions. He said,

“It’s great for our university in so many ways. Because I remember going to watch hockey games in the hut, and they were freezing their a– off because it was outdoors. And to where we are today, we’re talking about a kid winning an Olympic gold medal. Fantastic.”

UConn’s Tradition of Olympic Success Across Sports

While UConn is celebrated for producing exceptional women’s basketball players who have earned Olympic gold, Tage Thompson’s accomplishment brings new attention to the university’s hockey program. Among the women’s basketball athletes, some of the most decorated include Diana Taurasi — the most decorated basketball player in Olympic history with six gold medals — alongside Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Swin Cash, and Tina Charles. Their Olympic achievements collectively demonstrate the depth of talent that has passed through UConn’s athletics.

Thompson’s Olympic gold medal serves as an inspiration and signals continued growth and recognition for UConn across multiple sports disciplines at the international level.
