Napheesa Collier is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and for the Lunar Owls of Unrivaled. A versatile power forward, she also co-founded the Unrivaled league with Breanna Stewart to give WNBA players a competitive offseason option. After starring at the University of Connecticut, Collier was drafted sixth overall by the Lynx in 2019 and has since become one of the league’s most decorated two-way players.

Napheesa Collier was born on September 23, 1996, in Jefferson City, Missouri. When she first wanted to play organized basketball, the only Amateur Athletic Union team in her hometown would not let her try out, so her parents started their own squad, the Lady Warriors, and recruited girls from nearby towns. The Lady Warriors eventually competed in the national AAU tournament, and the team that had originally turned Collier away later offered her a roster spot, which she declined.
Growing up in Jefferson City, Collier watched fellow local star Maya Moore play at the University of Connecticut and later for the Minnesota Lynx, and Moore became a major influence on her basketball dreams. Family Background and Racing Lineage
Collier is the granddaughter of Gershon Collier, a Sierra Leone Creole lawyer, former ambassador to the United Nations, former ambassador to the United States, and briefly chief justice of Sierra Leone, who helped Sierra Leone gain its independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. He died two years before Napheesa was born. Her father, Gamal Collier, was briefly a professional boxer in five fights and has spoken about instilling in her the importance of self-sufficiency, responsibility, and the family name.
Her younger brother, Kai, played football at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.
Personal Life
Collier became engaged to Alex Bazzell, a basketball skills coach, in October 2019, and the couple married on October 7, 2022, in St. Louis. Their daughter, Mila Sarah Bazzell, was born on May 25, 2022. Collier has been active in climate advocacy, becoming the first WNBA player to join EcoAthletes, and in 2025 she signed with the Jordan Brand after spending the previous five years with Nike.
