Kelsey Mitchell’s Fever Future in Doubt Amid WNBA Uncertainty

Kelsey Mitchell, a standout leader for the Indiana Fever, demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the 2025 season, even as the team was challenged by several debilitating injuries. Her veteran presence was critical in maintaining team morale and performance during a difficult year. However, ongoing collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations between the WNBA and the players’ association are casting uncertainty over not only Mitchell’s future but the entire league’s upcoming season.

While fellow player Napheesa Collier recently expressed optimism that a new CBA will be finalized before the 2026 season starts, Mitchell herself openly acknowledged her concerns about whether she will be able to play this year. In a February 19 interview on Lisa Leslie’s Between the Lines podcast, Mitchell shared the anxiety that many players feel amid the unresolved situation.

And so none of us knows what our future holds, which is scary. I’ll be honest with you, it’s scary. But on the flip side, it’s like, none of us know what our future holds,

she said.

And so when we have these conversations about what we want to do, and what we do see, where we want to go potentially, it comes from a place of understanding,

Mitchell added.

Free Agency and Expansion Drafts Create Uncertainty

This year, Kelsey Mitchell is expected to become a free agent pending the resolution of the CBA, but no official timeline for free agency has been confirmed. The introduction of new teams—the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire—means expansion drafts are likely to occur before free agency can begin. While these new franchises have probably planned their draft strategies, the exact sequence and timing remain unclear until negotiations conclude.

Mitchell has felt the tension of these negotiations during her current play with Hive BC in the Unrivaled league, alongside teammates such as Sonia Citron, Ezi Magbegor, Monique Billings, Natisha Heideman, and Azura Stevens. Despite the uncertainty, she continues to find enjoyment and connection through these experiences.

Indiana Fever’s Commitment to Retaining Mitchell

Following the Fever’s performance in last season’s playoffs, the organization made it a clear priority to retain Mitchell’s services. Having been with the team for eight years, she has been a key figure navigating the franchise through its ups and downs. The hope remains that Mitchell will have the chance to keep providing leadership and contribute to the team’s progress as the next season approaches, contingent on the outcome of the ongoing league negotiations.
