On March 3, the Winnipeg Jets will honor Black History Night during their game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre. This event pays tribute to February’s Black History Month and supports NHL Unites, a league-wide effort focused on expanding hockey and fostering strong communities through the sport.
Special Guests and Cultural Performers Featured at the Game
Team Canada para hockey athlete Alyssa White and former University of Winnipeg volleyball star Wanda Guenette, an Olympian from 1996 and a recent inductee into the Canadian Volleyball Hall of Fame, will be recognized during the celebration. Fans will also enjoy performances by the local reggae group Dub City Foundation and ska band Stamina, along with Caribbean steel pan musician Clyde Heerah playing on the concourse.
Unique Culinary Offerings Reflecting Cultural Heritage
Executive Chef Steven Squier of Canada Life Centre joined with Winston Lord, Head Chef at the Hockey for All Centre, and local Caribbean-rooted Chef Rob Thomas to create a culturally inspired menu for the game. Attendees can savor dishes like suya beef poutine, Carolina-style pulled pork sandwiches, jerk chicken pizza, Jamaican beef patties from the local Patty Shack, and Haitian-style Jet Dogs.
Fundraising Auction to Benefit Black History Manitoba
Starting at 9 a.m. CT on game day, autographed Winnipeg Jets Black History Night jerseys will be available for online auction at tnyfauction.ca until 9 p.m. CT. Jerseys will also be displayed during the game. Proceeds from the auction will support Black History Manitoba, a volunteer organization committed to raising awareness of Black history and celebrating contributions from people of African descent in the province. Black History Manitoba will have a presence at the event, sharing more about their mission, and additional information can be found at bhmwinnipeg.com.
Community Engagement Through Black History Summit and Apparel
Earlier in the month, True North Sports + Entertainment collaborated with Black History Manitoba to host the inaugural Black History Summit. Approximately 350 students representing Black Student Unions from across Winnipeg convened at Canada Life Centre to hear insights from local Black entrepreneurs, hockey players, and True North team members. Fans can also shop the Black History collection designed by Zueike, a Black-owned athletic apparel brand based in Winnipeg, available at Jets Gear stores and online through truenorthshop.com.
