The Boston Bruins are awaiting clarity on Charlie McAvoy’s Bruins status ahead of their Thursday matchup, as the defenseman and goalie Jeremy Swayman remain off the ice after helping Team USA win gold. Although both players have returned to the United States following their international success, they have yet to rejoin their teammates in Boston, leaving their participation uncertain for the upcoming game.
Travel Disruptions Delay Player Returns Amid Harsh Weather Conditions
The Bruins saw some reinforcements Tuesday with bronze medalists Joonas Korpisalo and Henri Jokiharju back at practice. However, McAvoy and Swayman’s journeys have been complicated by severe weather affecting travel across the Northeast. A blizzard in Massachusetts on Monday led to thousands of flight cancellations, while New York, the original destination for Team USA’s return, also faced disruptive snowfall.
Head coach Marco Sturm acknowledged the difficulties in tracking the duo’s whereabouts. He said,
“It’s very tough to follow them. I don’t even know where they’re at,”
and added,
“I know New York didn’t work out for the guys because of the weather, they got stuck in Miami and now I guess they’re seeing the president. So honestly I’m not sure when they arrive. Hopefully they arrive soon because of obviously the flight and the weather conditions.”
Team USA’s Visit to the White House Included McAvoy and Swayman
After the Olympics, McAvoy and Swayman joined their teammates at the White House for a meeting with President Donald Trump, marking a high-profile moment for the squad. Despite the prestigious event, their travel back to Boston remains delayed, fueling questions about the Bruins’ lineup for Thursday.
Coach Sturm Considers Goalie Options for Upcoming Match
With Swayman’s status in question, Sturm has yet to confirm who will start in goal. Joonas Korpisalo, back from bronze medal duties, practiced with the team Tuesday. Sturm expressed cautious optimism about Korpisalo’s readiness, stating,
“I want to see, first of all, how Sway is,”
and continued,
“We’ve got (Michael DiPietro) here, too, and Korpi. I think it was a good thing that he came today to be on the ice and have at least two practices with us. I think he’ll be good to go on Thursday if we decide (to go) with him.”
Current Bruins Standings and Upcoming Challenges
As the Bruins prepare for Thursday’s game, they hold the second Wild Card position in the standings. The Columbus Blue Jackets trail Boston by four points but have played one fewer game, underscoring the importance of every upcoming contest. The uncertainty surrounding McAvoy and Swayman’s availability adds tension to the team’s efforts to secure their playoff spot.
