Dylan Strome’s Wife Slams Trolls Over ‘Girl Dad’ Backlash

Taylor Strome, wife of Washington Capitals center Dylan Strome, has openly condemned the online harassment directed at her family after the National Hockey League posted a picture that sparked controversy. The incident unfolded on Monday when the NHL’s X account shared a photo featuring Dylan and his 2-year-old daughter at Disney’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where the child wore a pink princess dress, and Dylan sported a hat topped with a tiara bearing the phrase “Girl Dad.” This image, intended to celebrate fatherhood, instead prompted backlash tied to unrelated political tensions.

Background of the Timing and Related Controversy

The NHL’s post coincided with fallout from a recent call between President Donald Trump and the USA men’s hockey team after their gold medal win at the Winter Olympics. During this call, Trump invited the men’s team to his State of the Union address but remarked he would also need to invite the women’s team or risk impeachment, comments that many saw as belittling the women’s accomplishments. This statement caused intense criticism, with many accusing the men’s team of laughing along rather than supporting their female counterparts.

Given the timing, many interpreted the NHL’s “Girl Dad” photo as an attempt to shift attention away from the controversy. The league also shared a video on that same day, further intensifying perceptions of a public relations effort rather than a genuine celebration.

Taylor Strome Denounces Harassment and Defends Her Family

Although Dylan Strome and fellow Canadian player Matthew Schaefer were not part of the Olympic teams, both players and their families faced abusive messages online. Taylor Strome described receiving “vile and disgusting” comments targeting her husband and toddler daughter. She highlighted the pain of being dragged into an issue unrelated to their family.

“We were placed into a narrative that we have absolutely nothing to do with, and we certainly did not choose to have our family used in it,”

Taylor wrote on Instagram.

You can debate adults all you want, but dragging my husband and especially my toddler into something that has nothing to do with us is beyond unacceptable.

In response, the NHL removed the controversial post, although the negative reactions had already caused distress. Taylor further expressed:

“The comments and messages about my TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER are some of the most vile and disgusting things I have ever read in my life,”

she said.

This isn’t about politics. She is a child. Full Stop. Do better.

Significance of Protecting Families Amid Public Disputes

This episode underscores the harmful effects of directing political and social debates towards innocent players and their families, especially young children. Dylan Strome was uninvolved in the political exchanges that sparked the controversy, yet his family suffered harassment as a result. Critics have also faulted the NHL for using family photos in a public relations attempt that placed these individuals at the center of an unrelated and heated debate. The situation serves as a reminder that families of athletes deserve respect and privacy, regardless of the public contexts in which the athletes perform.
