Shea Theodore’s Return Boosts Golden Knights’ Defense Depth

Shea Theodore was recalled from the Chicago Wolves on Monday, strengthening the Golden Knights’ defensive lineup. The 22-year-old defenseman’s return comes as the Golden Knights build on an impressive start to the season, having won five straight games and eight of their first nine.

Theodore’s Impact with Chicago Wolves and Golden Knights’ Roster Moves

Theodore, a former first-round pick by the Anaheim Ducks, dominated at the AHL level with 11 points in eight games (five goals, six assists), ranking sixth in league scoring despite playing defense. His strong showing left no doubt that he deserved an NHL roster spot. Initially cut at training camp due to the team’s surplus of defensemen and waiver considerations, Theodore’s recall followed recent moves sending Jason Garrison and Griffin Reinhart to Chicago.

Vegas head coach Gerard Gallant praised Theodore’s time in Chicago:

“He went down to Chicago, played great hockey down there,”

Gallant said.

“(Wolves head coach) Rocky Thompson said every game he played, he was one of their best players.”

Team Defense Situation and Theodore’s Prospects

The Golden Knights currently have Nate Schmidt, Deryk Engelland, Colin Miller, Luca Sbisa, Brad Hunt, Brayden McNabb, and Jon Merrill on defense. Since NHL teams typically dress six defensemen per game, Gallant has yet to determine how to incorporate Theodore into the lineup. Prior to joining Vegas in the Expansion Draft, Theodore played 53 regular season and 20 playoff games with Anaheim, where he was seen as a promising young talent.

The crowded Ducks blue line, filled with established veterans and no-movement clauses, ultimately led to Theodore’s departure. Gallant highlighted Theodore’s abilities and potential for the Golden Knights:

“Shea Theodore is a guy that’s got lots of talent,”

he said.

“He skates real well. He moves the puck real well. We’re excited. We’re excited to get him back on our team. He’s one of our bright young stars of the future.”

The Significance of Theodore’s Return for the Golden Knights

Bringing Theodore back adds valuable depth and youthful energy to a Golden Knights defense that is navigating roster adjustments. His skillset and potential growth align with the team’s ambitions, and his presence could be a key factor as Vegas pursues continued success this season. With Theodore integrated, the Golden Knights strengthen their defensive options, heightening their prospects in upcoming games and beyond.
