Matthew Schaefer, the 18-year-old rookie defenseman for the New York Islanders, has earned the NHL’s First Star of the Week honor for the period ending March 1, 2026, after an outstanding week of play. Leading the league with four goals last week, Schaefer’s performance has marked him as one of the brightest young talents in the NHL.
Historic Achievements in a Breakout Week
Schaefer delivered a remarkable display starting on February 26, when he scored two goals within 55 seconds to help the Islanders overcome a multi-goal deficit, securing a 4-3 overtime win on the road against the Montreal Canadiens. These goals, the 17th and 18th of his NHL career, broke Phil Housley’s record for most goals scored by an 18-year-old defenseman and set a new milestone for rookie defensemen in Islanders history, surpassing Denis Potvin.
Though he did not record a point in the Islanders’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 28, Schaefer concluded the week with another stellar effort. In a dramatic 5-4 victory against the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, he contributed two goals and one assist for a career-high three points and matched his best plus/minus rating at +4. This performance propelled him to become the second defenseman in Islanders history, following Potvin, to reach 20 goals in a single season. At 18, Schaefer is the youngest defenseman ever to hit this mark and only the fourth rookie defenseman in NHL history to do so. He also stands out as the first rookie defenseman from his draft class to reach 20 goals.

Consistency and Impact Beyond Scoring
Schaefer’s week cemented his reputation as a consistent offensive threat and impactful player. He became the first Islanders rookie defenseman in eight years to post a three-point game and achieved his 10th multi-point game this season. This feat places him alongside only one other 18-year-old defenseman in NHL history with as many multi-point games. Furthermore, his four multi-goal games this season tie the record for most by a teenage defenseman.
Statistically, Schaefer leads all rookies this season with 20 goals, seven power-play goals, 15 power-play points, and averages 24:07 minutes on ice per game. Among all league defensemen, he ranks second in power-play goals and is tied for second in total goals. Selected first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, Schaefer has amassed 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) in only 61 career games.
Schaefer’s Rising Role Among Islanders and the NHL
This energetic display of skill and resilience has earned Schaefer recognition as the third New York Islander to receive the NHL Star of the Week honor this season, joining goaltender Ilya Sorokin and forward Bo Horvat. He is the fourth Islanders defenseman named a Star of the Week in franchise history, a group that includes Noah Dobson and Adrian Aucoin. Schaefer is also the first Islanders rookie to receive this weekly honor since Mathew Barzal in 2018 and remains the only rookie defenseman from the Islanders to do so. Earlier in the season, he was distinguished as the NHL Rookie of the Month for October 2025.

What Schaefer’s Success Means Moving Forward
Matthew Schaefer’s record-setting week highlights not only his individual talent but also signals a shift in the Islanders’ defensive and offensive capabilities. His emergence as an offensive powerhouse on defense provides the team with a dynamic player capable of changing the course of games. As the Islanders pursue playoff positioning, Schaefer’s continued performance will be a crucial factor in their success.
Given Schaefer’s rapid development and impact, expectations are high that he will remain a central figure for the Islanders and in the NHL’s future defensive talent pool. His ability to combine scoring prowess with strong defensive play makes him a rare asset at such a young age, positioning him to influence both his team’s fate this season and his overall NHL career trajectory.
