Sharks Lock In Kiefer Sherwood with 5-Year $28.75M Deal

The San Jose Sharks have signed winger Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension worth $28.75 million, finalizing the deal ahead of his pending unrestricted free agent status. This agreement, averaging $5.75 million annually, reflects the team’s commitment to Sherwood as they aim to strengthen their roster moving forward.

Details of Sherwood’s Contract and Negotiation Background

The contract covers five years with varying salary and bonus structures: Sherwood will earn $4.5 million in salary plus a $2.5 million signing bonus in each of the first two seasons. The third year features a $4.15 million salary and $2 million bonus, the fourth year $2.4 million salary and $2 million bonus, and the fifth year $4.2 million salary. The deal includes a no-trade clause that diminishes progressively from year one through year five. Sherwood is represented by Judd Moldaver of Wasserman Hockey.

Sherwood reportedly sought a $30 million deal but settled just under that figure. This contract surpasses any previously handed out by Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson’s successor, outvaluing Tyler Toffoli’s four-year, $24 million contract signed a few summers ago. The length of the deal represents a departure from the Sharks’ cautious approach to long-term commitments, influenced by Sherwood’s leverage as a pending free agent and the relatively weak free agent market this season.

Sherwood’s Contributions and Questions About Future Consistency

The Sharks recently witnessed Sherwood’s impact firsthand in a game against the Montreal Canadiens, where he showed physicality, disrupted opponents, contributed offensively with an assist, and scored the game-winning goal late in the third period. These performances bolster the hope that Sherwood can maintain a strong presence for the Sharks.

However, there are reservations about Sherwood’s scoring consistency. While he has recorded 40 points once in his career, at age 31 and given his physical style, expectations for continued improvement are limited. The Sharks are essentially betting that he can sustain this level of play for at least the early part of his contract. The deal’s front-loaded structure and limited trade protections in the final years provide the Sharks some flexibility if his performance declines.

Implications for Sharks’ Roster and Future Moves

With Sherwood’s contract secured, the Sharks can now concentrate on addressing other roster priorities, particularly their blueline. The team is actively exploring trading opportunities for pending UFAs while seeking to reinforce their defense. Mario Ferraro, a key defenseman, is expected to be a significant name in any upcoming trade discussions as the Sharks look to reshape their backend lineup.
