Kiefer Sherwood Locks In 5-Year Sharks Extension Worth $28.75M

The San Jose Sharks finalized a five-year contract extension with forward Kiefer Sherwood on Wednesday, valuing the deal at $28.75 million. The Sharks acquired Sherwood earlier this year in a January 19 trade with the Vancouver Canucks, exchanging two second-round draft picks and defenseman Cole Clayton.

General Manager Weighs In on Sherwood’s Role

Mike Grier, San Jose’s general manager, expressed enthusiasm about keeping Sherwood on the roster.

“We are very excited to have Kiefer remain ‌in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building,”

Grier said. He added,

“The ingredients he brings to our lineup on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skill sets of his teammates and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.”

Sherwood’s Recent Performance and Career Overview

Since joining San Jose, the 30-year-old Sherwood has recorded one goal and one assist in five games while leading the team with 28 hits. Earlier this season, Sherwood accumulated 23 points (17 goals, six assists) over 44 games with Vancouver, including two hat tricks.

Before turning professional, Sherwood played three seasons at Miami University (Ohio) and signed with the Anaheim Ducks as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Over 314 NHL games spanning the Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, and San Jose Sharks, Sherwood has totaled 123 points, including 61 goals and 62 assists.

Sharks’ Playoff Hopes and Sherwood’s Potential Impact

The Sharks, currently just three points behind the second wild-card position in the Western Conference, have 23 games left to secure their first playoff berth since the 2018-19 season. Adding Sherwood to the lineup bolsters their offensive and physical presence as they push toward the postseason.

This extension reaffirms San Jose’s commitment to building a competitive team, with Sherwood expected to play a significant role in their upcoming campaigns.
