2026 NWSL Preview: Courage’s Big Shakeup Sparks Hope

The 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season will begin on March 13, featuring 16 teams aiming for the playoffs. The North Carolina Courage, who missed last year’s postseason by just one point, are entering the new campaign undergoing significant transformations, including a new head coach and notable roster turnover.

Coaching Shift and Player Movements

Mak Lind takes over as head coach in his first season with the Courage after arriving from BK Häcken, a Swedish women’s club. Lind replaces Sean Nahas, who was dismissed last summer due to a variety of issues within the team. This coaching change aligns with the team’s efforts to reverse last season’s ninth-place finish and contend more effectively.

The team has reinforced its squad with key signings such as goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, defender Ally Shlegel, and forward Evelyn Ijeh. However, the Courage also faced significant departures. Veteran goalkeeper Casey Murphy and defender Kaleigh Kurtz joined expansion teams Boston Legacy and Denver Summit, respectively, while longtime captain and midfielder Denise O’Sullivan transferred to Liverpool in January after nine seasons and multiple titles.

Leadership Void and Future Prospects

O’Sullivan’s exit leaves a considerable leadership gap following her contributions to two championship wins and three NWSL Shields. The offseason changes mark a period of rebuilding but also of renewed hope as the Courage seek to reclaim their status as championship contenders. The team’s ability to integrate new talent and adapt under Lind’s guidance will be critical to their performance in the 2026 NWSL season.
