The 2026 PGA Tour season has revealed two clear truths: Scottie Scheffler remains a dominant force, and Chris Gotterup is emerging as an elite competitor. Gotterup has won half of the first four events, vaulting to No. 5 in the World Ranking and becoming the second-highest-ranked American after Scheffler. His hot start has captured the golf world’s attention and confirmed the presence of a rising star.
From Breakthrough Win to Consistent Contender
Gotterup first gained notice in 2024 with a win at the Myrtle Beach Classic, though the victory came in an alternate-field event overshadowed by Rory McIlroy’s concurrent Wells Fargo Championship win. Afterward, Gotterup struggled, failing to crack the top 50 in his next eight tournaments, leading some to wonder if his success was a one-time achievement.
I definitely knew I was a work in progress, and still am,
Gotterup said after shooting a final-round 64 to force a playoff and ultimately defeat Hideki Matsuyama.
But I knew that my game was suited for out here, and I knew if I continued to work and at least had faith in what I was doing that I would be able to be in the position someday. To say I’ve won four times is pretty crazy.

Establishing Credibility Against Top Competitors
Gotterup’s 2025 season marked a key turning point. Winning the Scottish Open by narrowly beating Masters champion Rory McIlroy demonstrated Gotterup’s ability to perform under pressure against elite players. This success was no fluke, as he finished third at the Open Championship soon after and recorded top-10 finishes at both the 3M Open and the Tour Championship. These consistent high placements unlocked opportunities to play prestigious Signature Events—including Pebble Beach, Genesis, and Bay Hill—set to begin in the upcoming months.
Maintaining Momentum Into 2026
Gotterup did not slow down to start 2026, capturing the Sony Open and adding another win at the WM Phoenix Open via a playoff against Matsuyama. His victory in Phoenix was defined by a strong finish, birdieing five of his last six holes and clinching the playoff on the first extra hole. He currently ranks second on Tour in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, a key metric of driving performance.
I’m just really enjoying being out here right now, and I’m having fun,
Gotterup said.
I feel confident in what I’m doing and feel like I have played well enough to feel confident to be able to be in those positions. So far, I’ve been able to capitalize on those, and I’m excited for the rest of the year.
Upcoming Highlights and Growing Spotlight
Alongside earning spots in marquee tournaments, Gotterup will make his Masters Tournament debut in April. His growing prominence is illustrated by the media attention he now regularly attracts, including post-victory interviews. After his latest win, CBS reporter Amanda Balionis highlighted Gotterup’s ability to rise to significant moments.
We saw it at the Scottish Open,
Balionis remarked,
when the moment is biggest, when your back is against the wall, that’s when you show up. Where does that come from?
You know, a lot of hard work,
Gotterup answered emotionally before adding,
You make me cry every time.
The Significance of Gotterup’s Emergence in PGA Tour
Chris Gotterup’s rapid ascent generates excitement as he challenges established stars like Scheffler and McIlroy. His ability to sustain success, breakthrough in major events, and secure entry to prestigious tournaments signals a reshaping of the competitive landscape. As the 2026 season progresses, expectations are high for Gotterup to continue his impressive run and establish himself as a leading figure on the PGA Tour.
