Rory McIlroy Returns to Pebble Beach to Defend Title

Rory McIlroy has returned to the Monterey Peninsula this week, determined to defend his title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Last year, McIlroy secured a two-shot victory at Pebble Beach Golf Links, which helped launch a remarkable stretch in his career, including winning the Players Championship and completing the career Grand Slam by capturing the Green Jacket at the Masters.

Reflection on Last Year’s Breakthrough Performance

The 36-year-old golfer from Northern Ireland described last year’s win at Pebble Beach as a pivotal moment.

“Obviously last year was a great way to start the 2025 season,”

McIlroy said. Having struggled historically at Pebble Beach, the victory was especially significant because it came on a course where he had previously not contended strongly.

He added,

“I think winning on a ‌golf course that I hadn’t won on before, hadn’t really contended on before, I feel like it gave me a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season.”

His control over ball flight during challenging conditions was a key component of his success.

McIlroy praised his performance on challenging poa greens, saying,

“I hit driver a lot, giving myself short irons in. I think last year as well, it was probably the best putting performance I’ve ever had on poa greens. I usually come to the West Coast and I struggle a little bit on the poa, and last year I didn’t. I holed a lot of putts and that was a big difference.”

Preparing for Another Strong Showing

Following last season’s strong finish and a solid start to 2026, McIlroy remains optimistic about his form. After the PGA Tour playoffs, he captured the Irish Open, tied for third in Abu Dhabi, and secured second place at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. His performance at the Australian Open extended his consistent play through 2025, while early events in the Middle East showed promise for the new season.

Regarding his current condition, McIlroy stated,

“I had two weeks in Dubai to sort of shake the rust off. Played OK, wasn’t anything spectacular. But I’ve had two nice weeks at home and done some practice. … I feel pretty good coming in here.”

Outlook for the Tournament and Season Ahead

McIlroy’s confident approach to Pebble Beach is based on his aggressive strategy and strong putting, which proved decisive last year. He hopes to replicate that success this week, noting,

“Yeah, it was a perfect way to start the year here last year. Hoping for something similar this.”

Defending his title at Pebble Beach will be a significant indicator of McIlroy’s trajectory this season, potentially setting the tone for further accomplishments on the PGA Tour and beyond.
