Scottie Scheffler Matches Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour Feat

Scottie Scheffler PGA Tour achievements have set a new benchmark in professional golf as he secured six tournament wins in 2024, including the prestigious PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Following an impressive start by Rory McIlroy, who captured victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, and The Masters early in the season, Scheffler quickly took control and demonstrated consistent superiority across the year.

Scheffler’s recent victory at The American Express event marked his first win of the current season, signaling that his form remains formidable despite a hand injury that disrupted his preparations over the previous Christmas period. His near-playoff finish at the WM Phoenix Open further emphasized his resilience and determination to maintain his lead in the global rankings.

Rory McIlroy Highlights the Consistency Required to Rival Scheffler

Rory McIlroy, often viewed as one of the few potential challengers to Scheffler’s Player of the Year aspirations for 2025, acknowledged the extraordinary consistency his rival brings to the game. At 29 years old, McIlroy himself recovered from a difficult initial round at TPC Scottsdale to finish just one stroke shy of the playoff, showcasing the high level of competition among top players.

Prior to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy reflected on his own performance and what it takes to match Scheffler’s relentless standard:

“If I had a critique of myself last year is that I didn’t bring the consistency that I maybe would have wanted post The Masters. I think some of that is sort of understandable, but Scottie just had his 17th top 10 in a row,”

McIlroy said.

“Even you look at him last week, he shoots two over in the first round and he just pieces it together again, finds a way, has a chance to win on Sunday.”

“He’s relentless. And I’ll never stop singing Scottie’s praises because he’s incredible at what he’s doing and the way he does it.”

“I’ve had nice runs like that, but I’ve always been a little more up and down. I think anyone that wants to catch Scottie or get anywhere close is going to have to consistently bring that sort of game week in and week out like he does. He’s really the first one since Tiger that’s doing this.”

Comparison of Scheffler’s Ranking Lead to Tiger Woods’ Peak Dominance

Scheffler currently holds an impressive lead in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), boasting more than twice the points average of McIlroy. However, when compared with Tiger Woods at his peak, Scheffler’s numbers still leave room for growth. Woods, following his historic Tiger Slam in 2001, averaged 32.33 ranking points, nearly double Scheffler’s current 17.04.

Notably, no modern-era player has exceeded an average of 20 points in the rankings, underscoring Woods’ exceptional dominance. Although Scheffler competes against arguably stronger fields today, Woods had to contend with elite opponents such as Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and Vijay Singh during their prime years, illustrating the enduring challenge of maintaining supremacy in professional golf.

Potential Trajectory of Scheffler’s Career and Legacy

As Scheffler continues to deliver outstanding performances, the golf world watches with anticipation to see how his career will unfold relative to some of the sport’s all-time greats. His consistent excellence suggests the possibility of shaping a distinguished legacy that could resonate for years to come.
