Rory McIlroy Ditches New Gear, Trusts Old Irons Again

Rory McIlroy has decided to abandon an experiment with new golf clubs and return to the trusty irons he has used throughout his career, as he prepares for the upcoming Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California. The Northern Irishman made this decision ahead of his first PGA Tour event of the year, aiming to regain momentum after mixed results with his new set of cavity-back irons in Dubai.

Recent Performance and Equipment Changes

McIlroy’s switch from blade to cavity-back irons brought him a third-place finish at the Dubai Invitational but was followed by a less impressive tie for 33rd at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. After testing the new gear and experimenting with different balls, McIlroy revealed at a pre-tournament press conference that he is reverting to the irons that have served him well throughout his career, believing his game to be in strong condition.

“I had a strong finish to the season last year, played well in the Middle East, went on to Australia, which was a great experience, sort of messed around with some different iron set-ups and sort of messed around with like a different ball and a few equipment changes,”

McIlroy said.

“That experiment is over – back to the trusty irons that I have played basically my whole career. (My) game feels in good shape.”

McIlroy spent two weeks competing in Dubai to prepare, noting his performance was decent but nothing spectacular. Following this, he spent two weeks practicing at home to sharpen his skills ahead of Pebble Beach.

“I had two weeks in Dubai to sort of shake the rust off, played OK, wasn’t anything spectacular, but I have had two nice weeks at home and done some practice. I feel pretty good coming in here.”

Recent Achievements Boost Confidence

Last season, McIlroy enjoyed a remarkable run that included a win at Pebble Beach and a second Players Championship victory. He then completed the career Grand Slam by defeating Justin Rose in a memorable playoff at Augusta National. Those successes have increased expectations for a strong performance at the upcoming signature event.

The 36-year-old hopes that his return to familiar equipment can help spark a promising start to the season, similar to last year’s triumphs at Pebble Beach.

“It was a perfect way to start the year here last year, (so I am) hoping for something similar this week,”

McIlroy added.

Field and Tournament Context at Pebble Beach

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a limited field event with just 80 competitors, is the first ‘Signature Event’ of the PGA Tour season. It draws top golfers, including world number one Scottie Scheffler, early FedExCup leader Chris Gotterup, and reigning FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood, who is making his season debut. Also competing is Justin Rose, fresh off a record-setting Farmers Insurance Open win at Torrey Pines.

This tournament sets an early tone for the season, providing McIlroy and his rivals a chance to build momentum as the Tour progresses.
