Bud Cauley Triumphs with Inspiring Ben Hogan Award Win

Bud Cauley, a PGA TOUR professional, has been named the recipient of the Ben Hogan Award for 2026, a recognition given to individuals who remain actively involved in golf despite enduring significant physical challenges. The announcement was made by the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), with Cauley’s award presentation scheduled for April 8 at the 52nd ISPS Handa GWAA Awards Dinner in Augusta, Georgia, coinciding with the Masters Tournament.

Cauley’s journey back to professional golf has been remarkable, following severe injuries sustained in a 2018 car accident that left him with five broken ribs, a broken left leg, and a collapsed lung. After missing over three years of competition, Cauley fought his way back onto the PGA TOUR leaderboard, securing his card again by tying for sixth place in the 2025 Players Championship. His resilience was demonstrated through a season that culminated in a 47th-place finish on the PGA TOUR’s points list, marking his best performance in more than ten years.

Overcoming Adversity: Cauley’s Road to Recovery

Since the accident, Cauley has endured a difficult recovery process, which tested both his physical and mental strength. His persistence and determination have not only led to his return to top-level competition but also earned him respect among peers and analysts. Reflecting on the award, Cauley expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him throughout his rehabilitation.

To be recognized by the GWAA for overcoming the challenges I faced recovering from my injuries means a great deal to me,

Cauley said to GWAA president Rex Hoggard, who covers the PGA TOUR for Golf Channel.

I’m very lucky to have the help and support from my family and friends. I wouldn’t be in the position to accept the Ben Hogan Award without them. Thank you to the GWAA. I’m very proud to add my name to the list of incredible past recipients.

Cauley secured the award with 45.9 percent of the votes cast, edging out fellow nominees Madelene Sagström and Kim Kaufman from the LPGA Tour.

Additional Annual Awards Announced by Golf Writers Association of America

Alongside Cauley, two other prominent figures in the golf world were recognized for their exceptional contributions. Mark Rolfing, a seasoned NBC Sports and Golf Channel commentator, received the William D. Richardson Award for his enduring impact on the sport, while Stacy Lewis, a celebrated LPGA player, was honored with the Jim Murray Award for her exemplary relations with the media.

Mark Rolfing’s Lifetime Contributions Recognized with Richardson Award

Mark Rolfing was selected as the recipient of the William D. Richardson Award, which honors individuals who have consistently made significant contributions to golf. Rolfing is widely known as golf’s “Mr. Hawaii due to his close connection with the two PGA TOUR events hosted in the state. His work extends beyond broadcasting, including efforts supporting recovery initiatives following the catastrophic 2023 wildfires in Maui.

I am overwhelmed at the honor I have been given to receive this year’s GWAA William D. Richardson Award,

Rolfing told Rex Hoggard.

As I reflect on my career, I am constantly reminded of just how many people were so generous with their time and helped me along the way.

Rolfing also secured 45.9 percent of the vote, beating nominees Rees Jones, a renowned golf course architect, and LPGA star In Gee Chun.

Stacy Lewis Earns Jim Murray Award for Media Engagement

At 40 years old, Stacy Lewis was selected for the Jim Murray Award, which acknowledges professional players who exhibit outstanding cooperation and communication with the media. Early in her career, Lewis was hesitant about media interactions but grew to embrace them, recognizing the importance of telling the sport’s stories effectively. Her candid and insightful interviews have made her one of the most respected voices on the LPGA Tour.

It’s an honor to be named the recipient of the Jim Murray Award,

Lewis told Beth Ann Nichols, a former GWAA president and Golfweek LPGA correspondent.

I’ve always believed that connecting with the media is an important part of being a professional golfer – not just to represent yourself, but to help tell the story of the game. I’m especially proud to help shine a light on women’s golf and the incredible talent on the LPGA Tour. To be recognized for this award is incredibly meaningful to me.

Lewis won with 38.5 percent of the vote, surpassing former PGA TOUR professionals Mark O’Meara and Paul Goydos.

Honorees to Be Celebrated Ahead of the Masters Tournament

The awards dinner in Augusta will also celebrate the GWAA’s male, female, and senior players of the year—Scottie Scheffler, Jeeno Thitikul, and Stewart Cink, respectively.
