Billy Horschel Urges Inviting Rahm and DeChambeau to Players

Billy Horschel recently expressed strong support for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, highlighting its importance in professional golf and advocating for the inclusion of prominent LIV Golf players like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. His comments come amidst ongoing discussions about the tournament’s place in the sport and who should be allowed to compete there.

The Players Championship has gained significant attention over the past week, sparking debates over its stature compared to golf’s major championships. Horschel, known for his impressive career including the 2014 FedEx Cup title, emphasized that winning The Players would be a remarkable achievement, even equating it to a major victory in his own view.

Debating The Players’ Status Among Golf’s Top Events

A recent PGA Tour trailer hyped the upcoming competition with the phrase

“March is going to be major,”

but Brandel Chamblee stirred controversy by calling The Players the most significant of the majors. This claim faced widespread criticism, with notable voices such as Phil Mickelson disputing it.

Despite the disagreement, Horschel firmly placed The Players alongside the traditional four majors. Speaking with Trey Wingo, he admitted he had yet to secure a major title but boldly stated that a Players Championship win would count as such for him personally.

He said,

“I’m going to say something, people are going to be on either side of it. There’s one thing I haven’t done, I haven’t won a major in my career. And I do believe I’m going to achieve that. I have said for me personally if I win a Players Championship, I will consider that a major,”

illustrating his view of the tournament’s significance.

Horschel also stressed the necessity of welcoming top LIV Golf figures back to the PGA Tour event.

“People are going to chastise me for that comment, and some people may agree with me on that comment. But I think that event in the sense of everything around it, the greatness of it, the field – now, the field, I will say I do believe the PGA Tour should invite the likes of Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, Bryson DeChambeau. I do believe that needs to be fixed in my opinion.”

Understanding The Players’ Impact on the Northeast Florida Community and PGA Tour Workforce

Horschel also highlighted the tournament’s importance beyond just the competition itself. Having lived in northeast Florida since finishing college, he understands the event’s deep ties to the local community and the extensive efforts behind the scenes.

He explained,

“I’ve always considered it a fifth major. Listen, I’m biased, I live there. I’ve lived there since I got out of college. I understand what that event means to the northeast Florida community. I understand what event means to everyone on the PGA Tour, not Brian Rolapp, not Jay Monahan, there’s hundreds of employees on the PGA Tour that no-one knows about that work so hard to make the PGA Tour so great. They work so hard to make The Players Championship unbelievable.”

This statement recognizes the hard work of countless PGA Tour staff who contribute to the event’s success.

Challenges in Reintegrating LIV Golf Players at The Players Championship

Despite Horschel’s call for inclusion, it seems unlikely that LIV Golf players will appear at The Players Championship next month. Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cam Smith have opted not to return through the PGA Tour’s Returning Member Program, which previously allowed Brooks Koepka to rejoin the Tour.

Earlier last year, there were signs that LIV players might compete at TPC Sawgrass, as speculation mounted about a merger agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Tiger Woods mentioned at the Genesis Invitational that a deal was nearing, and reports suggested LIV stars could be invited to The Players.

These discussions, however, eventually stalled. The developments underscore how unpredictable and complex the relationship between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf remains, with negotiations and potential reunifications far from certain.

The Ongoing Debate and Future Prospects for The Players Championship

The swirling controversy over The Players Championship’s status and the participation of players from rival tours highlights challenges in professional golf’s current climate. Billy Horschel’s vocal stance serves to remind fans and officials of The Players’ prominence and the importance of presenting the strongest possible field.

As negotiations continue behind the scenes, the future of LIV players competing at marquee PGA Tour events like The Players remains uncertain. The tournament’s significance to the sport, the local community, and the PGA Tour’s extensive network of dedicated employees ensures it will remain a focal point for these discussions moving forward.
