Rory McIlroy Battles Weather to Lead Genesis Invitational Round 1

LOS ANGELES — Rory McIlroy managed to secure a 5-under 66 in the opening round of the Genesis Invitational on Thursday at The Riviera Country Club, sharing the clubhouse lead with Jacob Bridgeman despite difficult weather conditions. The tournament faced a weather delay due to rain, followed by windy and cold conditions that challenged all 72 players in the field.

The shift in weather made the course tougher, especially the greens, which were unusually soft but quick. McIlroy described a preference for the rain over the strong winds that followed but adapted well enough to maintain his position near the top of the leaderboard. The storm caused a nearly three-hour suspension in play before conditions worsened with increased wind and chill.

Round Halts and Challenging Course Conditions Affect Player Performance

The rain soaked the course early, creating puddles on the already soft greens and prompting the delay. When play resumed, players faced a rare combination of soft but fast putting surfaces and strong winds that complicated shot selection. Players had to adjust quickly to these changing conditions, testing both skill and resilience.

Rory McIlroy opened strong with three birdies over his first four holes and demonstrated remarkable recovery skills, particularly on the par-3 sixth hole. There, he saved par by chipping over a bunker that split the green, staving off a potential setback. Overall, McIlroy was steady, losing just one shot throughout the round and matching Bridgeman’s score, who also handled the day’s circumstances with poise.

McIlroy Expresses Changing Attitude Towards Tough Playing Conditions

Growing up in Northern Ireland, McIlroy has often expressed a preference for warm, sunny weather, but his outlook on playing in difficult conditions has evolved.

“I’ve started to just really enjoy this style of golf,”

said McIlroy, reflecting on his adaptation to tougher environments.

“If you had asked me 10 years ago, I didn’t enjoy these conditions, but it’s been a shift in a mindset and maybe just a continuation of trying to build upon the skill set that I have,”

McIlroy added.

“Then when it does get to conditions like this, I’m a lot more prepared. I wouldn’t say I enjoy them, but I can certainly handle them better.”

Notable Scores and Highlights from the Field

Aaron Rai climbed to 6 under with two holes left before play was suspended by darkness and will resume Friday morning. Other notable performances included Ryan Fox, who carded a 67, and Collin Morikawa, the recent AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner, who finished the round at 68.

The course conditions produced some extraordinary shots, such as Adam Scott‘s tee shot on the par-3 sixth, which landed mere inches from the hole and was plugged into the turf. McIlroy’s own aggressive play was evident in a dramatic 9-iron shot from 181 yards downwind that nearly produced a birdie, and a remarkable shot on the short 10th hole where he launched the ball from rough to within inches of a distant pin.

“I honestly don’t know how they got it to this. Like, I’ve never seen greens like this,”

Morikawa commented.

“You could stop any club from anyplace — from the rough, flyer lies. I think I had two or three shots today, flyers out of the first cut and rough and I’m not worried about missing the green at all.”

Scottie Scheffler Struggles Early, Weather’s Toll Evident

Scottie Scheffler faced a difficult start, ultimately tied for last place in the 72-player field after completing 10 holes without a birdie before darkness halted play. Scheffler’s troubles included a three-putt on the opening hole, missed greens, and several missed birdie opportunities. His round was marred by frustration, notably after he slammed a bathroom door on the ninth hole during his round.

Scheffler’s score stood at 5 over when play ended, with an 8-foot birdie chance remaining on the par-5 11th, despite missing both the fairway and approach shot. His performance marked a potential third consecutive tournament opening round without breaking par, a streak he has not experienced since his rookie season in 2020.

Jacob Bridgeman’s Strong Debut Amid Wind and Pressure

Making his debut at Riviera and competing in Signature Events for the first time, Jacob Bridgeman impressed with a robust performance. He began with a dramatic 15-foot eagle putt on the opening par-5 hole but also faced some early challenges, including trouble on the par-3 fourth where a forward tee placement shortened the hole to 220 yards. Bridgeman found himself short on the apron, and his chips missed the mark by notable distances.

However, Bridgeman elevated his game significantly after the weather delay. As the wind intensified, he executed five birdies in a 10-hole stretch and missed only one green, showing strong command over his ball flight and course management.

“I think one of my strengths is flighting shots down, hitting shots where people don’t really know how far it’s playing, what the number actually is and just kind of feeling it out,”

Bridgeman said.

“I think today, especially in the wind, it played into my favor. I got to hit some of those shots that I saw some people hitting high-ballooning shots that were getting smoked by the wind.”

Impact of Weather Delay and What to Expect Next at The Genesis Invitational

The weather delay forced the suspension of play near darkness Thursday evening, pushing the completion of several players’ first rounds into Friday morning. The forecast predicts dry conditions for the rest of the week, which should allow players to focus on their strategies without further interruptions.

Rory McIlroy’s strong start signifies his continued adaptation to challenging conditions, bolstering his position as a contender. Meanwhile, players like Bridgeman and Rai have provided compelling performances that could influence the leaderboard’s movement as the tournament progresses. Scottie Scheffler and others will be looking to reset and improve after tough opening rounds.

The Genesis Invitational remains a critical event on the PGA Tour, with performances here offering momentum for the rest of the season, particularly for players seeking to solidify their rankings and credentials in Signature Events.
