Rory McIlroy Trails Leaders by One at Genesis Invitational

Rory McIlroy is just one stroke behind co-leaders Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman as he heads into the weekend of The Genesis Invitational, held at the Riviera Country Club in California. The world No. 2 is aiming to secure his first title of the season after an error-free second round that highlighted his strong position midway through the tournament.

Following a tied 14th place finish last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy’s season started with a tied third at the Dubai Invitational on the DP World Tour. On Friday, he carded a six-under-par 65, including four birdies and an eagle at the 11th hole, helping him reach 11 under par for the event.

McIlroy Reflects on Course Conditions and Performance

McIlroy commented on how the course layout benefits players, saying,

“There’s no Pacific Ocean to hit into around this golf course, so that helps. I still hit some loose shots, but the course setup is in a way that you can get away with it a little bit more.”

“But I’ve hit it well, I’ve controlled my distance well for the most part, and I’ve holed some nice putts from inside eight feet for pars when I’ve needed to.”

Leaders Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman Maintain Slim Advantage

Marco Penge, an English player expecting his second child next week, and American Jacob Bridgeman share the lead at 12 under par following impressive seven-under second rounds. Penge made five birdies across his final seven holes after adding gains at the 1st and 6th. Bridgeman matched this by mixing seven birdies and an eagle with two bogeys, showing resilience throughout his round.

Other Contenders Hold Strong Positions

Other English contenders Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for eighth place at seven under, while Aaron Rai is just one stroke behind, tied 12th. Xander Schauffele and Adam Scott are tied for fourth at nine under. Scott had an eight-under 63 on Friday, marking the round of the day, although a bogey on the last hole slightly diminished an otherwise strong performance.

Scottie Scheffler Struggles but Makes Cut, Extends PGA Tour Record

Scottie Scheffler, ranked world No. 1, narrowly made the cut after a challenging second round. He was four over par for the tournament with only nine holes remaining but rallied with four consecutive birdies to return to even par. He secured his place in the weekend by sinking a critical seven-foot putt on the final hole, thereby extending his PGA Tour cut streak to 68 consecutive tournaments, the longest active run on the tour.

Scheffler finished the day three under par and trails the leaders by 12 strokes as he prepares for the weekend rounds.
