Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irish golfer, discussed the ongoing growth of the TGL series after participating in this week’s TGL event. During Monday’s competition, his team, Boston Common GC, faced Atlanta Drive GC, providing McIlroy with an opportunity to share his vision for expanding the TGL, emphasizing plans that could ease travel and eventually introduce the format internationally.
McIlroy Shares Vision for Expanding TGL with New Facilities
In a post-round press conference, Rory McIlroy compared the potential growth of TGL to touring international concerts, suggesting the possibility of establishing additional facilities, perhaps on the West Coast, to reduce travel challenges for players and fans. He also considered the idea of taking the league beyond the United States in the future.
“To replicate one of these facilities on the West Coast maybe, just to make the travel back and forth a little bit easier, but then if we could do it where we can say, yeah, bring it internationally or travel with it, however that looks,” McIlroy said.
“Obviously you have massive concerts that travel around the country and they can set things up. So maybe in time. Obviously we’re only into year two, and we’ll see how it goes. Obviously we’ve got the women’s league coming up later this year, so hopefully that goes well. Maybe if that’s Phase II, maybe Phase III is trying to build a facility elsewhere,” he added.
The TGL league started last year with its inaugural season and has announced a new women’s league, set to feature the top-ranked players from the LPGA Tour. This expansion signals TGL’s commitment to broadening its reach in the golf entertainment landscape.
Boston Common GC’s Performance Reflects Progress in Second Season
Monday’s match saw McIlroy’s Boston Common GC competing against Atlanta Drive GC, where they faced challenges in the simulators and ultimately lost 5-2. Despite this setback, the team had earlier secured a decisive 9-1 victory against The Bay Golf Club, showing improved form compared to last year.

Reflecting on the team’s progress, McIlroy acknowledged their strides in performance so far this season compared to their previous attempt, highlighting the positive impact of new teammate Michael.
“I think compared to last year this has already been a success, getting our first couple of wins,” McIlroy said. “Obviously Michael has been a really good addition to the team. But yeah, we said to him walking off the green there, this is how we felt all last year, so welcome to your first defeat.
“But yeah, we still obviously control our own destiny, and hopefully, as I said, get the win tomorrow night and the match on Sunday is obviously a little easier,” he added.
So far, Boston Common GC has collected two wins this season, starting with a 7-5 victory over Los Angeles GC and following up with the strong 9-1 win. This marks a significant improvement from missing out on the playoffs last season.
McIlroy’s Recent PGA Tour Achievements
Outside of TGL, Rory McIlroy has been active on the PGA Tour, beginning his season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He posted rounds of 68, 67, 72, and 64 to finish tied for 14th place. Shortly after, he achieved a tie for second at the Genesis Invitational with scores of 66, 65, 69, and 67.
McIlroy’s competitive form across different platforms emphasizes his determination and adaptability as he balances his involvement in TGL and traditional tournaments.
What the Future Holds for Rory McIlroy and the TGL Series
Rory McIlroy’s comments reflect a cautious yet hopeful outlook on the continued expansion of TGL, including the debut of the women’s league later this year. His vision for new facilities and possibly international growth could reshape how golf is experienced and consumed. As TGL moves into its second year, these ambitious plans may soon translate into concrete developments that enhance accessibility and engagement for players and fans alike.
