Tony Finau’s recent changes in his golf equipment have contributed to an improved performance on the PGA Tour in 2026. This shift, highlighted by his updated club setup, particularly his new Ping prototype putter, reflects a careful and methodical approach to his gear choices that aims to enhance his game stability throughout the season.
Understanding Finau’s Equipment Strategy and Seasonal Adjustments
Known for being reserved about his equipment preferences, Tony Finau entrusts his gear choices to a small, focused team rather than frequently experimenting during the competitive season. Ping Tour representative Dylan Goodwin describes Finau as a “man of few words” who prefers to rely on equipment that works without overanalyzing it, shifting only when necessary.
Kenton Oates from the Ping Tour staff confirmed that Finau had a minimal number of clubs made specifically for him, with only five clubs crafted in a season—the lowest among Ping-supported players. Oates remarked on the pressure this places on the team to get the setup right before the season begins, saying,
“It maybe puts a little more pressure on us as a staff when he does come in to get it right, because you know he doesn’t want to be testing during the year,”
and added,
“If he is testing product throughout the year, then it’s probably frustrating to him, since that’s really something he doesn’t want to do. So we just got to make sure that we get everything down at the beginning of the year.”
Finau completes much of his club fitting and adjustments during the offseason, typically visiting the Ping team two or three times between November and the start of the tour season, whether the first event is in Hawaii or the desert. Oates noted,

“But once we get going in the season, he doesn’t make a lot of changes at all.”
Notable Features and Improvements in Finau’s Golf Bag
Despite his cautious approach to equipment changes, Finau’s bag remains distinctive on tour. He uses heavier swingweights, oversized grips, and has incorporated a new Ping prototype putter into his setup. This year’s modifications have coincided with a stronger competitive showing after a challenging 2025 season with only one top-10 finish.
A key upgrade for Finau has been his switch to the Ping Prototype Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue Onset putter. Early in the season, he improved significantly in putting performance, rising from 155th to 58th in Strokes Gained: Putting after the first two tournaments. This is a remarkable recovery compared to his 111th place finish in the same statistic last year. His putting excellence was especially apparent at Pebble Beach, where he led the field and finished 18th overall.
Details of Tony Finau’s Golf Ball Selection
Starting at the foundation of his setup, Finau consistently uses the Titleist Pro V1 Left Dot golf ball. This choice remains unchanged and is central to his equipment preferences, reflecting his dedication to reliable and familiar tools as he continues to refine his performance on tour.
