Brooks Koepka caught fellow PGA Tour player Hideki Matsuyama off guard by presenting him with a birthday cake on February 25, marking Matsuyama’s 34th birthday. The unexpected celebration happened during a gathering where Koepka brought out a cake adorned with candles to honor the Japanese golfer.
A fan named Catherine shared videos of the heartfelt moment on her X (formerly Twitter) account, capturing Koepka emerging from a room as people began singing “Happy Birthday.” Matsuyama appeared surprised by the gesture and responded by shaking hands with Koepka afterward.
Currently, Hideki Matsuyama is not competing this week, having last participated in The Genesis Invitational where he finished tied for 28th place. Meanwhile, Koepka is making his third tournament appearance since his return to the PGA Tour at this week’s Cognizant Classic.
Koepka Faces Challenges in Opening Round at Cognizant Classic
Brooks Koepka began his round at the Cognizant Classic on Thursday, starting on the first tee with mixed results. He recorded a bogey on the fifth hole but quickly recovered with birdies on the sixth and tenth holes. Despite the strong moments, he also suffered two bogeys and a double bogey, finishing the round at three-over-par 74.
Before the event, Koepka reflected on his connection to the tournament during a press conference on Wednesday. He shared,

“I mean, growing up here, it was — I came every year. I remember carrying the sign. From probably I was nine, ten years old until probably a junior, senior in high school I remember carrying the sign. It’s always good memories. I remember when it was at Mirasol. It was always a lot of fun getting up close to the guys, seeing everything, and then obviously being able to play in it is special. It’s nice.”
He also expressed the comfort of playing close to home, saying,
“My whole family and friends get to come out and see, and they’re not able to all the time. It’s a nice event. It’s definitely weird staying at home. You just get so accustomed to living out of a suitcase or hotel or whatever. But it’s enjoyable. It’s nice to come back and just feel your own comforts when you get home.”
Koepka’s Recent Tournament Performances Before Cognizant Classic
Leading up to the Cognizant Classic, Brooks Koepka competed at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he posted rounds of 73, 68, 73, and 70, ending tied for 56th place. Following that event, he took part in the WM Phoenix Open but struggled, with rounds of 75 and 69 that resulted in missing the cut. His performance this week will be closely watched as he continues his comeback on the PGA Tour.
The birthday surprise from Koepka to Matsuyama highlights the camaraderie and respect shared among players on the PGA Tour, even amid intense competition. As Koepka strives to regain his top form, moments like these remind fans of the personal connections behind the sport’s high stakes. Matsuyama’s ongoing break from competition may give him fresh energy for upcoming events, while Koepka’s progress at the Cognizant Classic could signal a turning point in his return to golf’s spotlight.
