Shane Lowry surged to the front of the leaderboard at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after delivering an exceptional round of 63. Entering the final day six strokes behind leader Austin Smotherman, Lowry’s remarkable play allowed him to climb to 13 under par overall, placing him one shot ahead of Smotherman and Colombia‘s Nico Echavarria.
Lowry’s Birdies Fuel His Charge to the Top
Lowry started strongly with birdies on the first, fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth holes, completing the front nine at five under par. He extended his momentum with another birdie on the 10th hole and finished the round with two more birdies on the last two holes, completing a flawless scorecard free of bogeys. Meanwhile, Smotherman carded a round of 69 to remain in contention alongside Lowry and Echavarria.
Lowry Reflects on His Round and Plans for the Final Day
Speaking to the PGA Tour about his round, Lowry remarked,
“Everything went pretty well, especially early on,”
emphasizing his strong start despite some missed fairways. He added,
“I hit the ball on the fairway a lot yesterday and then missed a few early today, but I held a few nice putts at the start and then started hitting the ball really well, gave myself lots of chances and converted a few.”
He expressed satisfaction with his overall performance, saying,
“I thought it was a really nice, solid round of golf. To birdie the last two holes was kind of the icing on the cake. My goal going out today was to get myself in the last two groups going out tomorrow. If the conditions are like this tomorrow, there are low scores out there.”
Final Round Poised for Excitement
With Lowry leading by just one shot over Smotherman and Echavarria, the closing round is set to be closely contested. The consistent scoring and favorable conditions suggest that the final day will see intense competition for the title at the Cognizant Classic. Shane Lowry’s surge significantly enhances his chances for victory and adds further intrigue to the tournament’s conclusion in Florida.
