Ricky Castillo surged into the lead at the Puerto Rico Open on Saturday after delivering an impressive round that featured four birdies over five holes amid challenging windy conditions. His performance at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, set him one stroke ahead as players prepare for the tournament‘s final round.
Steady Play Keeps Castillo at the Top Despite Wind
Castillo’s consistency continued with a bogey-free round of 4-under-par 68, marking his third consecutive round with that score and bringing his total to 12 under par. Despite gusty and difficult conditions that troubled many competitors, Castillo managed to maintain control.
“This is the position that all of us have dreamed of and want to be in a chance to win a golf tournament,”
Castillo said.
“I’ve been fortunate to have that opportunity a few times and haven’t gotten it done, so, hopefully, we’ll do it tomorrow.”
“In the end, we’re just trying to play the best we can and just stick to my process and focus on what I can control.”
Castillo added.
He noted the challenging conditions, explaining the difficulty of trusting one’s shot amid strong and gusty winds.
“It was really whipping out there and blowing and it could really get tricky at times,”
Castillo remarked.
“When it’s blowing that much, it’s really hard to trust yourself and trust the line, especially when it’s gusting. But I felt like I did a really good job of managing my game, managing my emotions today really well, so it was good.”
Chandler Blanchet’s Struggles Shift Attention
Rookie Chandler Blanchet, who had been drawing attention as the early leader through the first two rounds of this alternate event held alongside the Arnold Palmer Invitational, experienced a difficult day. Starting with three bogeys within his first five holes, including bogeys on the first two, Blanchet’s momentum faltered.
He managed some intermittent birdies but ultimately shot a 2-over 74 and dropped into a tie for second place at 11 under par.
“Yeah, it was a grind. No one said it was going to be easy,”
Blanchet admitted.

“The more you’re in these positions, the more comfortable you’re going to be. The more often you can get in this, the more often it’s going to go in your favor towards the end.”
Tie for Second Place Features International Competition
Sharing second place at 11 under alongside Blanchet are England’s John Parry, Germany’s Matti Schmid, and 18-year-old Blades Brown. Parry got off to a fast start with three birdies in his first four holes, while Schmid found his rhythm in the middle of his round, securing several birdies on the back nine. Meanwhile, Brown battled early mistakes before an eagle on the 14th hole revived his chances.
“It broke right and then left, and then left again. Then as it went down the hill, it just broke right,”
Brown described his eagle putt.
“And luckily enough, I got the speed correct and it snuck in the left side.”
Others Close Behind Highlight Intense Leaderboard
Also within reach at 10 under are Davis Thompson and Germany’s Jeremy Paul, both positioning themselves as serious contenders. After a strong showing earlier in the tournament, Gordon Sargent, who was the runner-up 24 hours prior, recorded an even-par round on Saturday, slipping to a tie for eighth but remaining just three shots behind Castillo.
The leaderboard remains tightly packed, with 19 players within four strokes of Ricky Castillo’s lead. Among them is amateur John Daly II, son of two-time major champion John Daly, who posted a 2-under 70 to reach 9 under par.
Closing Thoughts on Puerto Rico Open’s Final Stretch
With the final round imminent, Ricky Castillo’s steady and poised performance in challenging winds positions him as the player to beat at the Puerto Rico Open. The wide leaderboard margin and presence of numerous international competitors suggest a competitive day ahead that could see dramatic shifts in standings. Castillo’s focus on controlling his game and emotions may prove crucial as he aims to convert this opportunity into a victory.
