Ricky Castillo Leads Dramatic Chase at Puerto Rico Open

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Ricky Castillo surged to the top of the leaderboard Saturday at the Puerto Rico Open, posting a flawless bogey-free 4-under 68 in challenging windy conditions. His performance earned him a one-shot lead heading into the final round at Grand Reserve Golf Club, positioning him for a potential breakthrough victory.

Originally hoping to compete in Florida’s prestigious $20 million Signature Event, Castillo instead made the most of his appearance in Puerto Rico. His steady play, highlighted by a brilliant chip-in birdie on the 12th hole, allowed him to maintain composure over the closing holes despite gusty winds that unsettled many competitors.

Castillo arrived at 12-under 204 and will share the final group with England’s John Parry, who secured his PGA TOUR card last year through the DP World Tour rankings.

This is the position that all of us have dreamed of and want to be in a chance to win a golf tournament,

Castillo said.

I’ve been fortunate to have that opportunity a few times and haven’t gotten it done, so hopefully we’ll do it tomorrow.

Young Contender Blades Brown Impresses with Eagle and Final Round Chance

Adding excitement to the leaderboard, 18-year-old Blades Brown continued his pursuit with a 3-under 69, which included a spectacular 50-foot eagle putt on the par-5 14th hole. Brown’s score gave him another opportunity to make history this season by becoming the youngest PGA TOUR winner in nearly a century.

Earlier this year, Brown had been among the final group alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at The American Express before fading on the final day. His performance in Puerto Rico shows resilience and growing confidence as he approaches Sunday.

All this is just experience, Brown said, reflecting on his rapid development since graduating high school in January.

Just having that moment and that experience with Scottie and Si Woo (Kim) and being in the final group is going to help me tomorrow being in the hunt again,

he added.

I’m really looking forward to it. I love to compete and it’s going to be a fun day tomorrow.

Competitive Dynamics and Other Key Players on the Rise

Matti Schmid also posted an impressive 68, trailing Castillo by just one stroke as he joined fellow contender Chandler Blanchet, who entered the third round with a commanding four-shot lead. However, Blanchet’s performance waned on the greens, where missed short putts led to a score of 74, dropping him behind the leaders.

John Daly II, the 22-year-old son of two-time major champion John Daly, grabbed attention in his PGA TOUR debut. Daly tied for the lead briefly after an eagle on the par-5 12th hole. His aggressive play included a remarkable approach shot off the deck on the next par 5, although a three-putt from 75 feet prevented an additional birdie.

Daly’s round remained strong despite ending a streak of 46 holes without a bogey by lip-out on a 15-foot par putt at the 18th. Reflecting on the challenging conditions, he noted:

It was solid, Daly said.

For sure it was the windiest day of the week so far. It was really hard to get the numbers right. But stayed in it well, hit some good shots. Sucks to make my first bogey in a while on 18. Hit a good second shot, just the wind let it rise in the air. Oh, well, it was a good day.

Implications for Rankings and Future Tournaments

Castillo was just shy of securing a spot in the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, which features a $20 million purse. The winner of the Puerto Rico Open, meanwhile, earns a prize of $4 million, mirroring the winner’s share at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, along with invitations to THE PLAYERS Championship and the PGA Championship.

This opportunity places the Puerto Rico Open as a pivotal event for players like Castillo, Parry, Brown, and others vying to elevate their status on the PGA TOUR and qualify for top-tier competitions later in the season.
