Sahith Theegala Weighs In: Should Players Championship Be a Major?

The Players Championship is recognized as a premier event on the PGA Tour, often prompting debate about whether it deserves the status of a major championship. Ahead of the 2026 tournament, American golfer Sahith Theegala expressed his views on this ongoing discussion. While Theegala holds the tournament in high regard, he is hesitant to push for it to become an official major.

Currently ranked 97th in the world, Theegala acknowledges the prestige surrounding the tournament but emphasizes the importance of tradition within golf’s established major events. He indicated that although he would not oppose the Players Championship gaining major status, he finds it somewhat unnecessary.

“I would be okay with that. Obviously, there’s been a lot of discourse about it. I would say it’s almost unnecessary to make it a fifth major,”

said Theegala following the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“I think one of the beauties of the majors, and not to knock on the Champs Tour on the LPGA, but the four majors just seem like it almost heightens it to another level. A major is a major, and if there’s a fifth major, that’s awesome. But just with the history and the numbers that we’ve had, I would be fine with it, but I wouldn’t be like super pro for having it be a fifth major.”

“I love the event, awesome event. Again, the feeling you get on the weekend there. A couple of years ago, I was in the third or fourth-to-last group, and it felt like it was one of the last groups at a major. So it’s great, it’s obviously a great event. Does it need to be a fifth major? Not really.”

These remarks reflect the widespread respect among players for the Players Championship, despite it remaining outside the official major tournaments in golf.

Why The Players Championship Commands a Unique Atmosphere

Theegala also highlighted the distinct energy at TPC Sawgrass, explaining why the tournament stands out on the PGA Tour calendar. He described the event’s vibe as different from other competitions, pointing to the palpable excitement felt by players and fans alike.

“When I’m there, the energy’s pretty palpable,”

Theegala shared.

He elaborated, noting that while players may not necessarily push themselves harder physically compared to other tournaments, they are keenly aware of The Players Championship’s elevated status. The convenience of accommodations and amenities during the event make it one of the most comfortable weeks of the season for professionals.

Theegala also touched on the course’s difficulty, underlining the balance of risk and reward that defines play at TPC Sawgrass. The layout allows for low scoring opportunities but constantly threatens players with costly mistakes.

“It’s a scary golf course. It’s very stressful because you know if you play well, you can shoot really low out there, there’s a lot of birdie holes. But there’s a double bogey waiting on every other hole, it seems like.”

“Yeah, it’s definitely a huge one. It’s one of those events where you win it, nobody’s forgetting that you won The Players.”

These comments illustrate why the Players Championship is held in such high esteem and considered a pinnacle achievement in the sport even without being classified as a major.

The Future Role of the Players Championship Within Golf

Theegala’s cautious view on elevating the Players Championship to major status underscores the significance of tradition in professional golf’s structure. His thoughts suggest that while growth and change are possible, preserving the unique identity held by the four established majors remains important to players.

As debates continue around the tournament’s status, Theegala’s perspective highlights the deep respect athletes have for the Players Championship’s challenge and prestige. The event’s dramatic setting at TPC Sawgrass and its competitive intensity are likely to secure its position as one of the most revered stops on the PGA Tour.

Looking ahead, whether the Players Championship will formally join the ranks of golf’s majors remains uncertain, but its influence and esteem among players like Sahith Theegala ensure it will remain a centerpiece of professional golf for years to come.
