Following UFC 324 in Las Vegas, Arman Tsarukyan expressed doubts about Paddy Pimblett’s ability to compete at an elite lightweight level. Pimblett had the opportunity to claim the interim UFC Lightweight Championship in a high-profile bout against Justin Gaethje, which served as the headline event for UFC’s first show on Paramount+. Despite some promising moments, Pimblett ultimately lost the fight by unanimous decision to Gaethje.
Tsarukyan Critiques Pimblett’s Fight Strategy
In a post-fight interview with Megan Olivi, Tsarukyan revealed that the outcome did not come as a surprise to him.
“I told everybody Justin’s gonna win by decision,”
Tsarukyan said.
When asked about Pimblett’s approach, Tsarukyan openly criticized the strategy Pimblett employed during the match.
“I didn’t understand his gameplan even,”
Tsarukyan stated.
He wanted to box with Gaethje but he couldn’t wrestle him. He couldn’t box him. He’s just a little bit young and he has a better chin, but he’s a trash can.
Tsarukyan Questions Gaethje’s Performance and Readiness
Tsarukyan also expressed some dissatisfaction with Gaethje’s performance, suggesting Gaethje might not fare as well against other opponents like himself or Ilia Topuria.
“Paddy let him do that, but Paddy’s not top fighter,”
Tsarukyan said.
If it was me or Ilia, Justin couldn’t fight like that.
Upcoming Title Unification and Potential Opportunities
With Gaethje set to participate in a title unification bout against reigning UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria, the timeline remains uncertain due to Topuria’s current hiatus. Following UFC 324, Topuria posted on social media, warning Gaethje that he is “screwed” once he returns. If Topuria’s absence extends, Tsarukyan may eventually receive another opportunity to challenge for the lightweight title.
Although Tsarukyan has not always been favored by UFC officials, his presence during the UFC 324 post-show interview might signal that his standing within the organization is improving.
Possible Future Implications for Pimblett and Tsarukyan
The trajectory of Paddy Pimblett’s UFC career remains uncertain after his recent loss, while Tsarukyan’s blunt assessment fuels questions about the futures of both fighters within the lightweight division. Fans and analysts alike are left to wonder whether Pimblett will eventually capture UFC gold or if Tsarukyan will secure another title shot.
