Kyoji Horiguchi Challenges Teammate Alexandre Pantoja for Title

Kyoji Horiguchi, former Bellator and RIZIN flyweight champion, is setting his sights on a UFC title fight with his teammate Alexandre Pantoja. After a successful return to the UFC in 2025 at UFC Qatar, where he submitted Tagir Ulanbekov in the third round, Horiguchi is now pushing for a shot at the title.

At the time of Horiguchi’s return, Pantoja was the reigning flyweight champion. However, Pantoja lost the belt later that year at UFC 323 when Joshua Van defeated him after Van sustained a dislocated shoulder in the first round. With Alexandre Pantoja aiming for a rematch, the division remains highly competitive, with contenders like Tatsuro Taira and Manel Kape also positioned to challenge for the championship.

This weekend, Horiguchi is set to face Amir Albazi at UFC Fight Night 266. A victory against the No. 6-ranked Albazi would strengthen his case for a title shot, placing him firmly among the top contenders at flyweight.

Horiguchi Confident in Pantoja’s Ability to Regain Title and Open to Facing Him

During the UFC Fight Night 266 media day, Horiguchi spoke with MMA Junkie, reiterating his desire to face Alexandre Pantoja inside the octagon. He expressed confidence that Pantoja can reclaim the flyweight title, and he hopes that a fight between them can follow. However, Horiguchi also left open the possibility that if he wins the belt first, Pantoja would have the chance to challenge him.

“Of course, he [Alexandre Pantoja] can do it [win back title], and I can challenge him, or I get the belt first, and then he challenges me. That’s a good story. I want to do that.”

Horiguchi emphasized that their interest in fighting is not just about friendship but about determining who the top flyweight truly is. He noted that training with Pantoja doesn’t fully reflect their competitive edge, which is why he wants to settle it within the UFC.

“It’s not just friendly. It’s about which one is strongest, which one is the best in the world at flyweight. In training, it’s a little bit fake. That’s why I want to do it in the UFC.”

Pantoja has indicated plans to return to competition by the end of summer, keeping his title ambitions alive. Prior to losing his belt at UFC 323, Pantoja publicly acknowledged Horiguchi’s role in supporting him on his path to becoming champion, stating that facing him would be an honor.

it’s going to be a privilege

The potential clash between these American Top Team teammates not only highlights their mutual respect but also underlines the tense competitive atmosphere within the flyweight division. With promising contenders like Tatsuro Taira and Manel Kape also emerging, the coming months promise to be pivotal for the title landscape.

Horiguchi’s upcoming bout against Albazi will be closely watched, as a win could position him for a high-stakes showdown that fans have eagerly anticipated for years.
