Ilia Topuria Offered Boxing Debut Against Undefeated Champ

Ilia Topuria, known in the UFC as ‘El Matador,’ has long hinted at a future transition into boxing once his MMA career concludes. The Spanish fighter’s ambition to become a champion in boxing has gained new momentum after an offer from undefeated super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, presenting Topuria a direct opportunity for his boxing debut.

Last year, Topuria briefly engaged in a social media exchange with one of boxing’s leading figures, Terence Crawford, signaling his interest in crossing combat sports disciplines. Now, Stevenson, who holds the Ring Magazine and WBO world super lightweight titles and is often compared to Floyd Mayweather because of his elusive style, has publicly invited Topuria to step into the boxing ring with him.

Topuria’s Current UFC Status and Future Prospects

Earlier, Topuria paused his UFC activities to tend to family matters, creating an opening for Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett to contend for the interim lightweight championship. Gaethje came out on top, positioning himself as Topuria’s next potential opponent. Meanwhile, Topuria is reportedly preparing for a high-profile return at the UFC White House event, where his visibility could sharply increase.

As he contemplates a career shift to boxing, the challenge from Stevenson marks a significant moment that could accelerate this transition.

Shakur Stevenson’s Invitation and Perspective on Skill Differences

During a livestream with Adin Ross, Stevenson addressed the opening for Topuria, underscoring the differences between MMA boxing and professional boxing:

“The skill level (between MMA boxing and boxing) is different,”

Stevenson remarked.

“Tell (Topuria) to come and fight me. I don’t care (if he’s a crazy boxer) tell him to come and fight me,”

he added.

Stevenson recently captured his 25th professional victory by decisively defeating Teofimo Lopez to claim the super lightweight crown. Although Stevenson competes at 140 pounds and below, the matchup would likely be more balanced than a potential fight between Topuria and Crawford.

Assessing Topuria’s Potential to Excel in Boxing

While Topuria is often regarded as the best boxer within the UFC, it is important to acknowledge that MMA’s boxing differs significantly in skill and technique from professional boxing. Despite his impressive striking ability in mixed martial arts, it remains uncertain how well his skills will translate to the boxing ring, where the level of specialization is notably higher.

Topuria’s challenge against a world-class boxer such as Stevenson would serve as a critical test of his adaptability and boxing prowess beyond the MMA cage, potentially shaping his future legacy in combat sports.
