O’Malley Warns Yan: Avoid Merab Dvalishvili After Back Surgery

Sean O’Malley has expressed concern for Petr Yan’s upcoming fights as the Russian bantamweight champion recovers from back surgery. After Merab Dvalishvili’s dominant title reign, many expect an immediate rematch with Yan, but O’Malley is advising against that matchup, warning it could risk aggravating Yan’s recent injury ahead of his return to the Octagon.

Dvalishvili’s Title Defense Record Highlights His Strength

Merab Dvalishvili, known as ‘The Machine,’ successfully defended the bantamweight title four times in 2025, showcasing exceptional control and resilience. His continued dominance has made him a formidable obstacle for any challenger, fueling calls for a prompt title fight against Petr Yan to settle the rivalry and determine the true champion.

O’Malley’s Comeback and His Perspective on Upcoming Fights

Sean O’Malley returned to competition in January after suffering back-to-back losses to Dvalishvili. He bounced back by narrowly defeating Chinese contender Song Yadong, signaling his desire to reclaim a top position in the bantamweight division. Following his win, O’Malley expressed interest in a rematch with Petr Yan, targeting the UFC event at the White House in June as an ideal stage.

Why O’Malley Believes Yan Should Delay Fighting Dvalishvili

O’Malley cautions Yan against rushing into a fight with Dvalishvili soon after back surgery, suggesting that such a decision could worsen Yan’s condition. Reflecting on his own experience with injury, he noted the risks involved when healing is incomplete, especially against a relentless opponent like Dvalishvili.

I want Petr Yan next, I hate the idea of him coming off back surgery and fighting Merab,

O’Malley said on his YouTube channel.

“Especially if he tries to rush it, I f—— rushed it with my hip and that’s completely different than a back. I don’t know what, or how extensive his back surgery is, like, it sounds bad, and then you’re gonna fight Merab? You’re gonna fight Merab within a year of having back surgery? It sounds like a terrible mistake, so I don’t know. I’m not gonna go out there and shoot and try and wrestle him… Why would you fight Merab after back surgery when you can fight me?

I suck at wrestling, I can’t grapple, I’m 1-2 in my last 3.

Prospects for a Yan vs. O’Malley Rematch at the White House Event

As Yan prepares to return within the next few months, the timing could present an opportunity for O’Malley to challenge him once again. The UFC’s White House event on June 14 could be a significant occasion for O’Malley to fight for the bantamweight title, particularly as one of the few American fighters in line for a championship bout. This matchup might offer a safer path for Yan’s comeback, avoiding the immediate demands of facing Dvalishvili’s relentless style.
