Geoff Neal Opens Up on 5-Year Battle with Addiction Ahead of UFC Return

UFC welterweight contender Geoff Neal revealed the intense personal battle he faced with substance abuse throughout a difficult five-year period of his career. Ahead of his upcoming UFC fight in Houston, Neal discussed how this struggle impacted both his life and performance inside the Octagon.

Neal is scheduled to face Uros Medic next Saturday at UFC Houston, marking his first fight since suffering a knockout loss to Carlos Prates at UFC 319. As he prepares to re-enter the cage, Neal aims to overcome recent challenges, including defeats in three of his last four bouts.

The Depths of Neal’s Addiction During His UFC Career Growth

In a candid interview with Home of Fight, Neal disclosed the extent of his difficulties with drugs and alcohol, which overlapped with his rise in the UFC welterweight ranks. The fighter detailed the severity of his situation and how it affected his readiness for competition.

Right around COVID, when I got sepsis, I fell into a hole. This is the first time I’ve opened up about it. Had a problem with addiction, drugs, and alcohol,

Neal said.

He explained that during this five-year battle, the longest period he remained sober was only about two weeks, usually just before a fight. This pattern led to poor preparation and being out of shape for bouts. Despite this, Neal found it surprising that he managed to maintain a position within the UFC rankings throughout this time.

Thank God for my wife, my wife was here for me throughout the entire time. The ups and downs, shoutout to her,

Neal shared.

It really feels like those past five years, I wasn’t living. I was there, but I wasn’t present…people that go through addiction, they know what I’m talking about when I say I’m actually living life and actually experiencing [life] again for the first time…I’m at the point now where whenever I see liquor, I get sick to my stomach, and I don’t think I’ll ever drink again.

Neal’s Path Forward As He Seeks Redemption in UFC Houston

Now embracing sobriety and a renewed focus, Neal is determined to return to his peak competitive form. He looks to rebuild momentum that once saw him claim victories over prominent fighters like Mike Perry, Belal Muhammad, and Rafael dos Anjos. His comeback fight against Uros Medic represents a critical step toward reestablishing himself among the top contenders in the welterweight division.

Neal’s fight at UFC Houston holds significant weight for his career’s future trajectory. Overcoming past struggles signals a major turning point and the possibility of renewed success in the competitive landscape of mixed martial arts.
