Rafael Fiziev’s UFC Comeback: One Step Back, Sprint Ahead

Rafael Fiziev encountered a challenging moment during his UFC 325 match against Mauricio Ruffy, which resulted in a defeat. Despite this tough outcome, one of Fiziev’s close teammates, Daniil Donchenko, believes a strong comeback is on the horizon. Donchenko, who holds a TUF championship and recently made his UFC main stage debut, shares a close bond with Fiziev, even describing him as a brother. The evolving journey of Rafael Fiziev UFC comeback remains a topic of keen interest among fans and analysts alike.

The fight against Ruffy was intense, but Donchenko emphasizes that Fiziev’s position among the world’s top lightweights remains secure, even with recent struggles to maintain a winning streak inside the octagon. Discussing the details of the UFC 325 bout, Donchenko noted the early dominance Fiziev showed before a crucial error shifted momentum. He explained,

“I mean it was great fight. Rafael start to show that he is like over, you know. He was so confident, he go forward from beginning, and I saw like Mauricio was a little bit like, you know, he don’t need what he should do in first round. Because Rafael put too much heavy shots, heavy punches, and then just second round, it was like one mistake from Rafael.” – Daniil Donchenko, Teammate

According to Donchenko, the outcome hinged on a single moment, much like in poker where an unexpected card can overturn everything. He pointed out that despite the loss, Fiziev’s past defeats each carry significant context. Specifically, he referenced three earlier losses, two of which involved formidable circumstances.

“Mauricio was special and he use his chance and we all see what happened. But you know one thing that it’s like I say it’s like in poker, you can win all the fight and then just one shot, you know. Just one shot can change everything but I still think, you know, he have this like sometimes; like before he have three losses but you know these three loses, it’s one loses against Justin Gaethje with a sick fight who is like champion right now, interim champion.” – Daniil Donchenko, Teammate

Donchenko further recalled how Fiziev fought while injured in one bout and took a short-notice fight flying 30 hours from Thailand to the U.S., showing gritty determination despite the odds.

“Second lose, he injured. He won the fight. He just injured you know and then he took like six days short notice from Thailand to US. Don’t forget you have planned for 30 hours you know. 30 hours and then you should fight in Las Vegas in desert. It was sick fight again and he almost beat Justin Gaethje again, you know. Yes of course, he had three loses in a row before but you see this loses it’s crazy and then he beat [Ignacio] Bahamondes.” – Daniil Donchenko, Teammate

Evaluating Fiziev’s Skills Compared to Other Top Lightweights

Looking beyond this single fight, Donchenko offers insight into where Fiziev stands within the UFC lightweight division. He insists Fiziev remains a smart, technical competitor with many prime years ahead. Donchenko compares him favorably to notable rivals such as Mauricio Ruffy, Benoit St Denis, and Dan Hooker.

He outlined his optimism about Fiziev’s potential, emphasizing both youth and versatility in skillset, stating that the loss should be seen as a temporary setback rather than a defining moment.

“He showed like he can be like really smart fighter and then with Mauricio Ruffy, he was really good you know. Just like I said, it’s like a poker and I really know that he can come back and go forward and forward. He’s still young, you know. Justin Gaethje, now 37 and he become a interim champion again. So Rafael have at least like five years. So I’m so excited to see his fights again. It makes sense for me to see his fight against [Dan] Hooker and who is there?” – Daniil Donchenko, Teammate

Donchenko also floated the idea of potential matchups, including a rematch with Mateusz Gamrot, suggesting these could test Fiziev’s capabilities as he climbs back up the rankings.

“Maybe rematch with [Mateusz] Gamrot like I don’t know. But he’s really more; for me, he’s really more complete fighter than Ruffy, than Benoit St Denis, than Hooker. He just like; it was like not his day. But he’s more like skills fighter. Because I know how he can wrestle, how he can grapple, and how he can strike. So, let’s see. It just like one step back for sprint up [laughs].” – Daniil Donchenko, Teammate

Implications for Rafael Fiziev’s Future in the UFC

The loss to Mauricio Ruffy may feel like a regression for Rafael Fiziev, but his close teammates remain confident this is a brief detour in what could be a sustained resurgence. With skill in striking, grappling, and wrestling noted by Donchenko, Fiziev still sits among the elite lightweights aiming for championship contention.

His age and experience suggest he could remain a competitive force for at least half a decade, offering fans promising bouts ahead. Potential matches against Dan Hooker or rematches with fighters like Mateusz Gamrot could define his UFC future, offering chances to display continued growth and resilience.

The emphasis on viewing setbacks as temporary and focusing on the long-term horizon underlines the relentless drive present in the UFC’s lightweight division. As Fiziev works to translate lessons learned from tough fights, his fans and analysts will closely watch for his next moves in the octagon, eager to witness his return to winning form.
