UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev has responded sharply to recent criticism from Sean Strickland, his divisional opponent. Since moving up to middleweight in 2023, Chimaev’s undefeated record and dominant performances have made him a formidable champion in the division.
Chimaev and Strickland’s Changing Relationship
Khamzat Chimaev, originally training full-time in Sweden, expanded his preparation by working with Eric Nicksick at Xtreme Couture. This led to a friendship with former middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who has long been a fixture at the Las Vegas gym. However, their relationship shifted as Chimaev stepped up to middleweight, transforming them from teammates and friends into rivals.
Chimaev Suggests Strickland’s Criticism Stems from Frustration
After becoming middleweight champion, Chimaev distanced himself from Xtreme Couture, while Strickland publicly criticized him. Strickland claimed Chimaev’s inactivity harms the division and asserted that he might be the only one capable of defeating the champion. These comments surprised many, considering Strickland’s two recent losses to Dricus Du Plessis, whom Chimaev defeated decisively to capture the title.
When asked about Strickland’s remarks by Michael Bisping, Chimaev replied,
“What should I say, this guy always talks so much,”
and added,
“We’ll see. We did spar a lot before but that’s why he’s so mad. Now Sean’s going to talk about bad things as well. He’s a bit mad.”
Although Strickland appears unlikely to immediately secure another title shot, an upcoming UFC Houston main event against Anthony Hernandez offers him a chance to boost his standing, possibly advancing his pursuit of a fight with Chimaev.
Chimaev’s Next Likely Title Defense Against Nassourdine Imavov
Regardless of Strickland’s next result, Chimaev’s first middleweight title defense appears to be lining up against Nassourdine Imavov. The two fighters have exchanged heated messages on social media, signaling that a title bout could happen soon. This matchup promises to further define the middleweight division’s hierarchy as Chimaev seeks to solidify his reign.
Khamzat Chimaev’s confident dismissal of Strickland’s doubts underscores the tension between former teammates turned rivals, illustrating the high stakes within the UFC middleweight division. Upcoming fights for both athletes will be critical in shaping future title scenarios and the division’s competitive landscape.
