Daniel Cormier Defends Ciryl Gane Amid Eye Poke Controversy

Daniel Cormier has stepped forward to defend Ciryl Gane regarding the ongoing eye poke controversy during the UFC 321 bout in Abu Dhabi last October. The French heavyweight contender’s actions in that fight have sparked intense debate following what many viewed as deliberate fouling during his match with champion Tom Aspinall.

Daniel Cormier Considers Ciryl Gane’s Fouls Unintentional

On a recent episode of the “Funky and the Champ” show alongside former fighter Ben Askren, Cormier addressed accusations that Gane deliberately poked Aspinall in the eyes. Askren questioned the practicality of intentionally executing such a foul.

I feel like the ability to poke someone in the eye from space, that’s kinda hard,

Askren stated.

And if you could be that accurate, why wouldn’t you just punch them in the eye?

Cormier sided with Askren’s point of view, emphasizing that eye pokes often happen accidentally in the fast-paced exchanges inside the UFC Octagon.

Poking somebody in the eye, for the most part, is by accident,

Cormier noted.

I was more inclined to believe that it was an accident. Tom Aspinall doesn’t…he thinks without a shadow of a doubt Ciryl Gane poked him on purpose,

he continued. I don’t believe it.

Tom Aspinall Insists on Punishing Ciryl Gane

In clear contrast, Tom Aspinall maintains he was deliberately fouled and plans to seek retribution. Having suffered considerable damage from Gane’s eye pokes, leading to double eye surgery, Aspinall is focused on a return that will culminate in defeating the French contender.

I’m not even thinking about (retiring) because you’ve got to take one step at a time, don’t you?

Aspinall remarked during a One on One interview.

Obviously the plan is to go back and beat the living daylights out of Ciryl Gane, that’s the plan.

With his recovery ongoing, Aspinall also shared his immediate goals.

But right now, the short-term plan is to get back to where I should be and get back in the gym,

he said.

The Broader Impact of the Disputed Incident

The eye poke controversy has divided opinions in the UFC community, raising questions about fighter conduct and referee enforcement during matches. Cormier’s defense of Gane provides a perspective that these fouls can occur inadvertently, highlighting the fast and unpredictable nature of MMA bouts. Meanwhile, Aspinall’s insistence on the intentional nature of the fouls underscores the frustration and physical toll such incidents impose on fighters.

This dispute may influence how future fights are officiated, particularly concerning eye poke incidents, and could shape the approach fighters take when engaging in close exchanges. With Aspinall planning a comeback and rematch against Gane, fans and analysts will watch closely to see how this rivalry unfolds under intense scrutiny.
