UFC President Dana White has suggested that Alex Pereira could soon pursue a heavyweight title, following the Brazilian’s recent hints about moving up from light heavyweight. Known for his success in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, Pereira aims to become the UFC’s first three-division champion.
Pereira last competed at UFC 320 on October 25, where he reclaimed the light heavyweight championship by defeating Magomed Ankalaev. Although his next opponent remains unconfirmed, White has expressed support for helping Pereira navigate this potential transition to heavyweight.
White stated,
“He’s one of those guys that always steps up and does whatever we need him to do. Whatever that guy wants to do, we’ll work with him.”
Alex Pereira’s Recent Performance and Rising UFC Status
During 2024, Pereira successfully defended his light heavyweight title three times, including a short-notice bout at UFC 303 which replaced the canceled McGregor vs. Chandler fight. His growing reputation as a top UFC star lends credibility to the possibility of him moving to heavyweight to chase another belt, with White showing willingness to support such ambitions.
Next Fight Speculation at the White House Event
UFC analyst Chael Sonnen has speculated that Pereira’s upcoming matchup will take place at the highly anticipated White House event. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sonnen suggested Ciryl Gane would be Pereira’s opponent, given the limited options at light heavyweight.
“I am very confident in telling you Alex Pereira is going to be on the White House card. Question comes: Against whom?… There’s nobody else at 205 pounds that would make sense.”
Sonnen further explained that the fight would likely be for the interim heavyweight title, given Pereira’s status as the reigning light heavyweight champ and the absence of Tom Aspinall due to injury.
“So I believe that Alex is going to come out and he’s going to be a heavyweight on the White House card. I also believe he’s going to take on Ciryl Gane. I also believe if you take a sitting world champion and you move him weight classes and he fights, it’s not just because. It’s for a belt, so this is where the idea of the interim title comes from.”
Implications for UFC and Heavyweight Division
If Pereira successfully makes the jump and competes for the heavyweight title, it would mark a significant moment in UFC history, positioning him as a dominant force across multiple weight classes. The possibility of an interim heavyweight title bout suggests the UFC is preparing contingencies due to current champion Tom Aspinall’s injuries, highlighting Pereira’s potential role in revitalizing the division.
With White’s openness to support Pereira’s heavyweight quest, fans and analysts will be watching closely to see if this plan unfolds at the upcoming White House event or later in the year.
