Charles Oliveira Feared Paralysis After Terrifying Injury

Charles Oliveira is set to face Max Holloway, the reigning BMF champion, at UFC 326 in an eagerly anticipated matchup. However, during their first encounter more than a decade ago, Oliveira suffered a frightening injury that nearly ended his career and left him fearing paralysis.

Oliveira’s initial fight against Holloway in 2015 ended abruptly just over 100 seconds in, as Oliveira was forced to stop due to what appeared to be a severe injury. Early reports incorrectly suggested he had torn his oesophagus, but the reality was far more serious and troubling.

In an interview with the New York Post Sports, Oliveira revealed the true extent of his injury, describing how he lost movement on the left side of his body and was warned that paralysis was a real possibility.

“I lost movement on the left side in the fight… it was an injury to my neck. There were talks that I could’ve been paralyzed because of that. The reality of that was I lost movement on the left side.”

The Brazilian described the terrifying moments following the injury, explaining how he feared that his MMA journey might have ended prematurely.

“It was no joke. I was told in the ambulance, the guys were trying to put an IV in my arm, and I wouldn’t even feel it because I couldn’t feel my left side. So I was scared that my career was over at that moment.”

Since recovering, Oliveira has returned to competition with strong performances, including a notable victory over Mateusz Gamrot in his most recent fight. As he prepares for UFC 326, Oliveira aims to capture the BMF title, although defeating Holloway will be a demanding challenge.

Uncertainty Surrounding Oliveira’s Mindset Ahead of UFC 326

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar has expressed doubts about Charles Oliveira’s psychological readiness as he prepares to face Max Holloway at UFC 326. Edgar referenced Oliveira’s recent setbacks, including significant losses to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, which have clouded his career trajectory.

Edgar also praised Holloway’s physical condition after moving up a weight class, suggesting the featherweight category at 145 pounds was too draining for him.

“I think Holloway is on a tear, kind of like a resurgence a little bit. [155 pounds] is definitely his weight class now. I think going down to 145 was too taxing on him.”

The veteran fighter questioned Oliveira’s motivation given the variability in his career before becoming champion, wondering if Oliveira still has the hunger to reclaim dominance.

“Oliveira, I don’t know, sometimes you just wonder. He had such an up-and-down type of career until he became the champion, and you just wonder if he’s still hungry. That’s what I wonder. I feel like Holloway is still chasing the bone.”

As Oliveira looks to rebound from those earlier defeats, the upcoming bout with Holloway represents a critical moment to prove his resilience and determination in the UFC lightweight division.
