Carlos Ulberg Warns Khamzat Chimaev: “Stay in Your Lane”

UFC light heavyweight contender Carlos Ulberg has issued a caution to middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev about moving up to 205 pounds. Following Chimaev’s middleweight title victory against Dricus Du Plessis last August, the Chechen fighter has hinted at competing in multiple divisions, including a potential light heavyweight debut.

While Chimaev initially targeted a title defense against Nassourdine Imavov and later ignited a rivalry with Sean Strickland, his suggestions to advance to light heavyweight have provoked a response from Ulberg, who firmly claims the division is his domain.

Ulberg’s Rise at Light Heavyweight and His Message to Chimaev

‘Black Jag’ Carlos Ulberg has been climbing the light heavyweight ranks, riding a nine-fight winning streak and establishing himself as a leading contender. His knockout of Dominick Reyes at UFC Perth last September further strengthened his claim for a title shot. Yet, discussions around Alex Pereira’s possible move to heavyweight continue to shape the future landscape, potentially placing Ulberg in a title fight against Jiri Prochazka for the vacant belt.

Chimaev’s teasing of a jump to 205 pounds has created uncertainty around the division’s progression. Despite many fans supporting Chimaev’s potential success as a light heavyweight, Ulberg remains unconvinced and has sent a clear message.

He’s too small. Stay in your lane brother, handle your business over there, I’ll handle mine here. 205lbs is mine!

—Carlos Ulberg, in an interview with Combat Sports Network

Fortunately for Ulberg, UFC president Dana White has put the brakes on Chimaev’s light heavyweight ambitions, insisting that the Chechen defend his middleweight title before moving up.

Potential Challenge if Chimaev Moves Up to Light Heavyweight

Although Chimaev’s rise to the light heavyweight class may be delayed, many expect it will happen eventually. If Ulberg secures the title against Alex Pereira or Jiri Prochazka, a bout with Chimaev could arise. However, this matchup presents unique challenges.

Chimaev’s relentless wrestling and pressure pose significant difficulties for any opponent, and despite Ulberg holding an 85% takedown defense rate, he has yet to face a wrestler of Chimaev’s calibre. This looming contest is viewed as unfavorable for Ulberg, given Chimaev’s distinct style and strength inside the octagon.

As tensions grow in these divisions, the clash between Ulberg and Chimaev stands as a possible blockbuster fight that could reshape the light heavyweight division’s future. For now, the fighters remain on separate paths, with Chimaev’s middleweight title defense mandated before any move upward.
