Chimaev’s Coach Warns Alex Pereira Against Super Fight Clash

Alan do Nascimento, the grappling coach of Khamzat Chimaev, recently gave his opinion on the possibility of Alex Pereira facing his fighter in a high-profile super fight. Although he acknowledged that a showdown between Pereira and Chimaev would generate significant financial gains for both competitors, Nascimento recommended that Pereira avoid taking the fight.

Alex Pereira, widely regarded as one of the UFC’s top stars, is known for his exceptional striking ability. He secured the UFC light heavyweight championship by knocking out Magomed Ankalaev in the first round at UFC 320 last October. Following this victory, Pereira revealed ambitions to move up to heavyweight, aiming to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in three different weight divisions.

On the other side, Khamzat Chimaev captured the middleweight crown in August at UFC 319 by defeating Dricus du Plessis through a unanimous decision. The Chechen-born grappling expert has since publicly targeted Pereira, issuing numerous calls for a direct confrontation.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Nascimento expressed his stance clearly, urging Pereira to prioritize his quest for a third championship belt rather than engaging with Chimaev. He explained:

“If we think from ‘Poatan’s’ side, if I were ‘Poatan’ or his coach or anyone close to him, it wouldn’t make sense to fight Chimaev. I’m not talking about risk. I’m simply saying that today, ‘Poatan’ has the opportunity to achieve something no one has ever done, to fight for a third belt… I wouldn’t accept a fight with Chimaev and would obviously move up to heavyweight to fight the champion and win the third belt.”

Insights on How a Pereira vs. Chimaev Fight Might Unfold

Alan do Nascimento also shared his analysis regarding the dynamics a potential battle between Pereira and Chimaev would exhibit. He described it as a contest where both athletes would aim to dictate the match within their preferred style and domain.

The coach elaborated on the strategic risks each fighter might face based on their strengths, noting:

“There’s no secret that both sides would try to keep the fight in their own area, their comfort zone. I believe that if Chimaev couldn’t get the takedown, he would run a serious risk of being knocked out. And if Chimaev gets the takedown and gets to a position, we’d have a great chance to submit. The fight would be a clash of styles and qualities. Whoever manages to impose their game and bring the fight into their territory as quickly as possible would start to take control.”

Nascimento humorously added his skepticism about Pereira’s chances on the ground but acknowledged the unpredictable nature of combat sports:

“What would surprise me is if ‘Poatan’ took Chimaev down [laughs]. I don’t think that will happen, but a fight is a fight. Just like Chimaev could shock the world by knocking out ‘Poatan.’ Or ‘Poatan’ could shock the world by submitting Chimaev.”

Potential Impact and Future Implications for Both Fighters

A fight between Alex Pereira and Khamzat Chimaev would undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated matchups in the UFC, pitting striking against grappling mastery. However, Nascimento’s cautionary advice highlights the complexity and stakes involved, especially as Pereira seeks to make history by securing a third divisional title.

Given these factors, Pereira’s decision in the near future will likely shape the trajectory of both fighters’ careers and the UFC landscape. Whether he follows Nascimento’s counsel to chase heavyweight glory or accepts the challenge against Chimaev, the outcomes will carry significant ramifications for the sport’s heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions.
